Forget Gloria Steinem and Madeline Albright. Cheryl Dietrich is the ultimate woman's warrior

Dietrich tells an amazing and often frightening tale of a woman's rise in the ultimate male-dominated world of Air Force Command. From wimp to warrior, this isn't just a book about the military. It's a step-by-step, daily exercise in determination and grit, a mental and physical grit that should have all of us wondering if we've ever really pushed ourselves. Compared with Dietrich, I doubt we have. Amazingly insightful, and just a bit embarrassing if you're a male, especially if you're uttering the same old nonsense: "Women in the military? Is that a good idea? Is it even safe?" Once you're finished this book, you won't ask those questions anymore. Forget Gloria Steinem and Madeline Albright. Dietrich is the real deal, a hero, a warrior, a thinker and an achiever. Well done, Cheryl.

Excellent motivational story!

Col Dietrich tells an important story - not only for any woman considering a uniformed service career, but also for any male who intends to serve alongside them. Having known many female field-grade officers in the military, as well as in the U.S. Public Health Service, I have found them to be every bit as competent, driven, and patriotic as their male counterparts. "In formation" certainly bears that out. In addition, Col Dietrich is able to tell this story in a way that speaks to the military model of perseverance, courage, personal growth, leadership, and being able to achieve things that you really did not know you were capable of. Hopefully, this book will be recognized in military circles as an excellent addition to officers' libraries.

A book every person, man or woman, who's thinking about the military needs to read. Very enlightening.

Although not a woman, I know many women who wanted to go into the military. Now those combat gates are opening and EVERY woman who is thinking about going, needs to read this book. The Col.'s story is one of a normal, fearful, overweight woman who needed purpose and, yes, a little escape from the life she was leading. She found PURPOSE, she found OBSTACLES, she found COMRADERIE and, above all, she FOUND HERSELF. This is no rah-rah story telling. it is a naked expose of her journey, the military acceptance and refusals she had to face, but in the end it helps to understand what makes our military - ALL branches - so strong and resilient.
