Excellent book. Easy to read; hard to put down

'Once a Warrior King' is an
excellent book. Written by Terry Turner using the pen name David Donovan.
I served on MACV Advisory Team 88 in Ben Tre, Kein Hoa Province, IV Corps, Sept. '68 - Aug. '69.
(That was where 'We had to destroy the town in order to save it.'
A dumb statement which was not true. Some buildings were damaged but were quickly repaired.)
I was fortunate to be at Province headquarers where we were able to live in a decent manner. By comparision, the MAT and District team where Terry Turner served, near the Cambodian border, had very little personal and US military support. It is obvious to me, as a former MACV officer, that the book 'Once A Warrior King' could have only been written by somemone who was actually there. The fact that T. Turner used a pen name is OK. Many of the names in the book were changed for reasons of privacy.

A must read for lover of Hawaii!

One of only a few books I have read more than once in my life, and I have purchased and given away many copies. Many, including myself, after visiting Hawaii, come away with a love and a feeling of deep spiritual connection for the islands and its people. The author, after extensive research into the ancient stories and traditions of the people, traces their history of migration to the islands, their relationship with God, and their adoption of Christianity. In parallel it tells the story of a long, deep relationship of God leading people across generations - a fulfillment and hope for us all. Aloha to you. Interesting thesis

This book should be on your bookshelf if you are a student of Hawaiian history, missions, or both. The author attempts to describe the ancient religion of the Hawaiians before the arrival of a man named Pa'ao from the south who apparently changed things and made the kapus (taboos) more oppressive. Don Richardson has endorsed this research, which parallels his own thesis, that cultures without the gospel have a gospel witness of sorts embedded in their culture. Whether or not this is true, we certainly know from Romans 1 that every people group has a conscience--and a God-consciousness of sorts. Another modern fallacy that this book undermines is the idea that civilizations start primitive and slowly advance. If Genesis is true, then the proto-Polynesians came from the middle east, probably stopped in India (source: Abraham Fornander) then headed east. Depending on the timeline, I think they may have picked up elements of the gospel in India--Kikawa has some alternative ideas about how biblical truth managed to find its way into the old meles (chants). You can take your pick. Certainly it is refreshing to see serious work done from a biblical worldview!

This aloha religion of God got corrupted when the Tahitian priest Pa’ao conquered the land around 1300 A.D., introducing the social stratification and rules of the “kapu” system, including cruel punishments and human sacrifice. The oppressive system was finally overthrown after 500 years by the successors of the great warrior king Kamamehameha, providentially anticipating the arrival of the first Christian missionaries six months later in 1819. In addition, a number of ancient prophecies were fulfilled in the details of the missionaries’ way of arrival (pp. 158-64). The Christian gospel resonated with the Hawaiian soul, and fully 96% of the population had become Christian by 1863 (p. 168).
Kikawa draws on the research of the well-respected anthropologist Wilhelm Schmidt in his 12-volume The Origin and Growth of Religion (1931) to document how the Polynesians, as well as many other ancient cultures around the world, had monotheistic beliefs (p. 52). Kikawa identifies this true God with the name “Io” used in ancient Polynesian worship (pp. 54-66), and even as far away as among the Maoris in New Zealand (p. 127).
Kikawa also documents how many of the stories of the pre-history chapters of the Bible, Genesis 1-11, are to be found in the mythologies of these societies. “Although many accounts …. have been distorted, they still point toward a common beginning.” (p. 82). And again: “The similarities in all of these stories are amazing…. and are recounted by people on the opposite sides of the earth.” (p. 111).
Certainly it is evident that the concept of “aloha” (“agape” love, peace, harmony) did not arise from the religion of Pa’au and worship of Pele. Kikawa identifies the concept with the biblical concept of “shalom,” further strengthening his argument that the original religion of the Hawaiians was rooted in the revelations to the Hebrews (p. 134).
Kikawa recognizes that the arrival of Western influence also had many negative consequences on the population. “For instance, in their zeal to condemn the worship of idols and other false gods, they also condemned some of the art forms such as the hula.” (p. 177). In addition, mercantile successors to the original missionaries, including some of their own children, took advantage of the ignorance and trust of the Hawaiians. They confiscated the land and oppressed the people, even to the extent that the USA marines illegally overthrew the royal government on Jan. 17, 1893 (p. 191).
Kikawa recognizes that there has been some reversion to the religion of Pa’au among native Hawaiians as a result of their disillusionment with Western Christianity (p. 186). However, he appeals that they should not judge Christianity on the basis of the injustice and hypocrisy they have experienced. Instead, they should see the Christian gospel as a return to their original identity as “aloha” people. (p. 209)
Dr. Kikawa has pursued a similar research and argumentation on the early religion of Japan, the country of his own family’s ancestry. This material is presented in the international award-winning two-part video entitled “God’s Fingerprints in Japan” (Aloha Ke Akua Ministries, 2005) with the tagline: “Is there evidence of the Creator God in Japanese history and culture?”
From the standpoint of missiological strategy, Kikawa’s approach certainly is appealing. It overcomes the faults and cultural insensitivities of past mission efforts. It embraces the dignity and spirituality of the mother culture, providing a rootedness along with a critique. Evangelistic appeals based on such respectful research can anticipate sympathetic understanding and receptivity.

Interesting

I enjoyed this book. I got it when it was a free read. At first the swearing put me off as there was a lot of it in the beginning, but after a while I saw that this was how these characters spoke, so got used to it. I would have liked more information about the aliens and the caves as this was intriguing. The story was a bit confusing for me when Cassie was suddenly filling a UFO with rocks to sink it into the sea. However, the story held my interest and the outcome was satisfying. I loved that there was kindness to the dog.

What legacy have the ETs left us?

Small time private investigators Cassie Atwood and Kurt Desmond work out of Seaside Heights, a slum area. One day a stranger comes to town offering them forty grand to find some ancient paintings in a long forgotten cave high in the cliffs. Cassie knows where to look having grown up there. This book has plenty of action but is confusing. The first three chapters are boring, she complaining about a dog they found who smells so bad, and she gets angry at Kurt who had been her lover and won’t let him sleep her anymore.

Although the story as it proceeds begins to bring in signs of extra-terrestrials, the important secrets these ET’s brought, and it includes so many other characters and these ET signs that the reader loses sight of the motivation of everyone’s actions. Besides that a good share of the dialogue is vulgar, sexually orientated and although might be enjoyed by men, probably women would lose interest.

This is a genre, however, that would appeal to some readers.
