Ikram Sehgal, a Pakistani Army officer, became a prisoner of war (POW) in India in peculiar circumstances after he was handed over to the Indians after the rebellion in East Pakistan in 1971. Along with officers and other ranks of mostly non-Bengali origin, he was held in an Indian POW Camp that was established in April 1971 despite the fact that the India-Pakistan War that led to the creation of Bangladesh did not break out until December 1971. These 100 or so POWs remained undeclared by India throughout 1971. Kept in solitary confinement he escaped on the 100th day of captivity, becoming the first Pakistani Army officer to successfully break out from an Indian POW camp in history.

Made from original notes taken during the period of de-briefing on return to Pakistan, this fascinating book gives an insider's account of conditions in Indian custody. It is a spell-binding and gripping tale of individual courage, of disparate friendships made in very adverse circumstances and the will to survive.

About the Author

Ikram Sehgal studied in Murari Chand (MC) College, Sylhet and Notre Dame College, Dhaka before graduating from Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), Kakul. Commissioned in October 1965 in 2E Bengal in October 1965, he served in Army Aviation from 1968 to 1971. Taken POW in April 1971 in then East Pakistan (now Bangladesh), he was the first Pakistani POW to escape from India in July 1971. He was sent back to West Pakistan in November 1971. Joining 44 Punjab (now 4 Sindh) in the desert, he was given battlefield promotion to the rank of Major on 13 December 1971, leaving the Army on 24 January 1974.

Member of the prestigious World Economic Forum (WEF), Switzerland and a Director of Bank Al Falah since 1998, he is also a Member of the Business Advisory Board (BAB) of International Organization for Migration (IOM), Switzerland, Director of East West Institute (EWI), USA. He is presently Chairman Pathfinder G4S, Pakistan and Wackenhut Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd.

SHARK ALERT?

Interesting read, although the subject matter ( a Great White Shark of over 20 ft in length) appears briefly as the author and his Dad manage to hook it. The shark makes good its escape notwithstanding Dad's careful preparation of the tackle he is going to use to capture it. The story then goes a bit vague as to what will happen next...will they get professional help to determine whether indeed there is such a shark, and its measurements can be verified? I am sure that such a shark exists or has existed, and we are talking of something in the region of 24 ft. As pointed out in the book, at some point the shark appears to stop growing lengthwise but not in girth, therefore weight-wise it would present quite a few tons to cope with. The narration is simple but coherent, but just good for people with an interest in sharks...

An enlightening read. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. Learned a lot about the Great White sharks. I'm definitely a believer in the Submarine. I loved all the shark boat trips, felt as if I was there. A great insight into Theo Ferreira's life as a Shark hunter turned protector.

This book was extremely amazing, so much excitement in one sitting living dangerously. I would recommend this book to someone who likes adventure, tense, excitement, sense of humor, likes animals and much more. But hey don't just take my word for it go buy the book.

Pretty Bad

I think there's a lot of false and useless information from a statistical point of view. This is coming from a math major concentrating in statistics. I suppose it's alright for psych but I don't think that anything can replace a good math based stat book.

A Great Book

This is an exceptional book. Another review says the book is not good with SPSS, which is strange because the book includes sections in all the main chapters that explains SPSS output. This book is great this way. The disgruntled student reviewer must have skipped these because they appear in special chapter boxes that (bad) students often skip over. The treatment of z scores (which is not all that crucial anyway - when was the last time you saw a z score in a research article) is outstanding, so the review just sounds like sour grapes to me.

This book explains statistics intuitively and gives great explanations and examples. It is written very clearly. After reading it, I was able to read and understand journal articles much better. It has special sections to tell you how statistics will be presented in research reports and how to read them. This is a great feature. This book helped me so much and I think it deserves seven stars!

An Excellent Introduction

The book is up-to-date and effectively presents the basic concepts. Deals with current power and sphericity concerns. Example SPSS-keyed analyses and APA-format results sections are especially valuable for research training. Uses post-hoc Tukey HSD test. Separate nonparametric chapters. The authors know their material (not always the case with statistics texts) and they provide a solid (higher-level) introduction. Good selection of topics and fairly thorough. Perhaps a bit wordy at times. One of the best available introductions. From a long-time teacher of statistics with no connection to authors.

About the Author
HG Wells was born in Bromley, Kent in 1866. After working as a draper's apprentice and pupil-teacher, he won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in 1884, studying under T H Huxley. He was awarded a first-class honours degree in biology and resumed teaching but had to retire after a kick from an ill-natured pupil afflicted his kidneys. He worked in poverty in London as a crammer while experimenting in journalism and stories. It was with The Time Machine (1895) that he had his real breakthrough.

the writing is fantastic and the ideas ahead of their time

This is an older compilation of HG Wells' short stories. Though the stories are old, the writing is fantastic and the ideas ahead of their time. Some stories are sci-fi, some fantasy, some nostalgic, many are like episodes of the Twilight Zone, and most have some moral or message to them. I highly recommend this book.

Short Stories by Wells

Most people know H.G. Wells as the author of classic Sci-fi stories like "War of the Worlds" and "The Invisible Man." In addition to his many classic works, Wells was a prolific author of short stories. While some of them are unexciting, many of them are simply genius. He mixes adventure, humor, and sci-fi in these unusual and odd-ball stories. Any fan of unique short stories will enjoy this collection.

H.G. Wells as you've never known him

First off, this collection does not contain The Time Machine, I'm not sure what collection the other reviewer was referring to. However, this collection does contain some of the best stories you will ever read.

I discovered H.G. Wells relatively late in life (within this past year, at the age of 33) when I stumbled on a discount copy of "The Island of Dr. Moreau." Like most people, I'd read "War of the Worlds" in high school and thought it pretty good. However, I believe to truly appreciate Wells one must be older. Old enough to have experienced some sort of life and to appreciate fine, clean writing.

After reading "The Island of Dr. Moreau" I was surprised at how current the story felt and how horrific some of the details were (it definitely didn't read or feel like a book written over 100 years ago). As a result, each time I stopped at a used book store I'd peruse the shelves looking for anything Wells. I stumbled on a collection of five of his short stories called "The Empire of the Ants." What? Wells wrote short stories? No way! I bought the book and read it over my vacation. I was amazed. Wells is known for writing in detail, but I'd say his writing is even more detailed in his short stories (possibly because in a short story you don't have to worry about bogging the reader down in too much detail- causing them to lose the thread of the story).

What Wells does, and what he's famous for, is writing in such detail that a scenario becomes supremely believable, then, he adds a touch of the fantastic to really knock the reader's socks off. Since he's already created this ultra-realistic world, the fantastic becomes believable and the reader is left thinking, "that could really happen, couldn't it?"

After reading that collection of shorts, I looked for something more comprehensive and found "The Complete Short Stories of H.G. Wells" edited by John Hammond. I was amazed again! The breadth and scope of Wells' stories is amazing: from a rogue plant with a taste for human blood, to a voodoo shaman out for revenge, to an upstart student with a conscious, Wells' imagination knows no bounds.

I'm about half way through the book and my favorite stories thus far are "The Flowering of the Strange Orchid," "Pollock and the Porroh Man" and "In the Modern Vein: An Unsympathetic Love Story" (the stories I decribed above) also "The Lord of the Dynamos," "The Sea Raiders" and "A Story of the Stone Age." I must also add that I read "The Country of the Blind" as part of the previous book containing Wells' stories and it too is amazing. Also, I admit that sometimes Wells delves into too much detail, which can frustrate the reader and slow the story down. However, of the 30-40 stories I've read thus far, it has only happened a handful of times.

I only wish that this collection contained a short critique before each story. Mr. Hammond is a renowned Wells scholar and has even written a book analyzing Wells' short stories (a book I can't locate, by the way), that book I believe is essential to really understanding these stories (namely due to Wells' tendency to critique society in his writing). Unfortunately, no real analysis is available in this compilation, thus, the reader is left to his own interpretation. For the most part, the stories are pretty self-explanatory, but it would be nice to understand some of the other meanings.

In conclusion, I give this collection 5 stars and I highly recommend it for anyone with a taste for great storytelling. Wells' writing is fantastic, touching, humorous, detailed and very sensitive- I think you'll be surprised at how he'll win you over. H.G. Wells is a master writer, and he's gained me as a fan for life! :)

About the Author
Dr. Beena Rani Goel is a renowned endodontist and a Reiki teacher. This book has been my guide of practicing Reiki in last 6 years. This book addresses very basic questions of how to practice Reiki and dives you deep into how it can heal various emotions and health issues. I received this book from my Reiki Master Ashwita, 6 years back and since then this has been my guide for healing myself and people around me. There are many ways of following Reiki and I am not sure what is right and what is not but one thing I know with my personal experience is that methods written in this book WORKS and works so powerfully that I and people whom I heal can feel the energy. Hailing from India and living in the USA, I know there is something magical about India which attracts many spiritual seekers from around the world. But there are very very few real GURUs who can answer those queries and have the ability to really guide. I haven't got an opportunity to meet the author of this book but Ashwita, my Reiki master and who referred me this book is one of those very few shining stars in India who can really guide in the right path and has that holistic knowledge about spiritualism.

Unappealing hero with a definite fetish.

There was something really 'off' about this story. I quite enjoy the whole step-sibling romance theme if the guy and girl manage to stay in touch with reality beyond their own sort-of-taboo relationship. But the hero in this book is decidedly weird and the naive heroine seems happy to leave behind any semblance of normal to enter his bizarre universe.

The technical aspects of this author's writing are fairly sound, which is a bonus in this market. However, I didn't find the hero and his particular fetish remotely appealing so I bailed on this one.

I enjoyed this book. I hope there Will be a second book letting us know what happens to Adam and Rose. Does Adam propose to Rose or does Rose after a while get tired of being tied up only one way to find out is if there is a part two.
