Do Not Take Practice Tests Before Studying The Text

"This set of practice tests is included to help you judge whether you are ready for the formal classroom exam.
The questions are not intended to cover all the key ideas from the chapter; rather, they have been randomly chosen from a larger bank of questions to spot-check your overall mastery of the text material.

Two types of tests are included:
a ten-item multiple choice quiz and a set of ten fill-in questions.
The first set tests your knowledge and application of a wide variety of concepts, while the fill-in questions test how well you have memorized the basic concepts summarized in the glossary.
Answers to the tests and a short explanation of the main concept in the multiple choice questions are found at the end of the test booklet.

DO NOT TAKE PRACTICE TESTS BEFORE STUDYING THE TEXT.
If you try to only learn the concepts covered in a short practice test you will miss most of the ideas from the chapter that might appear in a longer, formal classroom examination.
Instead, use the tests to check your study, not to direct it......"

Beautiful Music, Beautiful Lives

With dismissive foolishness, I was skeptical of one reviewer's remark about this four-author autobiography to be the best biography she ever read, assuming she hasn't read a whole lot of books. But I suspected it might be a pleasant read to find out in greater detail what life was like through the years for four icons of the sweeter side of American culture, so I ordered it. I've seldomly made better decisions in life, and I apologize to my fellow reviewer for my condescending thought. I wouldn't rank this book above the Bible or the novels of Dostoyevsky for example, but as a middle-aged man who has read somewhere between one and two thousand books during his life, this book making his top twenty all time list, regardless of genre, says a great deal.
It is hard to avoid invoking the obvious superlatives about how The Lennon Sisters have embodied beauty, friendly charm, and an ability to sing like angels, but this book, rendered in a conversational style, is an articulate, serious account of their own self-understanding, of what it meant to them personally to be so adored while preserving their sense of professional obligation, loving their fans along the way, and allowing themselves to find ways to enjoy it all. It wasn't always easy. They experienced their share of identity confusions, but coming from a large, affectionate family, twelve siblings and a huge extended family, there were many providential strengths on which to draw. The sisters take great joy in their memories, and this is precisely what makes this book so appealing. During the course of reading it, the reader feels as though he or she is invited to become an honorary member of the family. There are a lot of very personal admissions that always manage to invoke humor or joy for the happy events, or deep empathy for the family tragedies.
Achieving fame in the wholesome setting of The Lawrence Welk Show made the sisters objects of countless adolescent crushes across the nation, especially Janet, the youngest, the cute one, who most assumed might be available long enough to be approachable. Okay, I admit it; I harbored one too. Alas, she married at nineteen. There is a hilarious anecdote of one of her unacquainted suitors presenting himself at the family front door greeted by a consternated father and equally mystified daughter.
Given the book's honesty, it is sad to later read how finding lasting happiness in life seemed to be more difficult for Janet-no one's fault-but gratifying to read that it eventually did occur. The authentic courtship stories of the sisters are very warmhearted, even for a generally non-sentimental type like me. This book is so infectious, one even ends up enjoying all the incorporated family photos. A favorite has to be the image of Dee Dee and her fiancé, Dick Gass, gazing back towards the camera personifying a happy young couple of the early sixties.
A second favorite has to be of Peggy in her favorite Halloween costume, St. Therese of Lisieux. That the pressures of being young entertainers who helped support the family, spending much time on the road, did not cause destructive strains in the family is testament to the strengths of their two loving parents, not affluent, but very hard working and able to instill a deep religious faith in each of them, as well as the rest of the family. This is a family that seems never to have lacked for a knowledge that love is the most important thing in life.
For all the innocent crushes on America's sweethearts, there were clearly a few mentally unbalanced stalkers they had to contend with. But even here their unyielding support for each other gave them unusual strength. When one of the stalkers pursuing Kathy seemed to be getting close, while they were on the road, the sisters were forced to take up arms. One wonders what ever happened to that poor night-tour window washer who, after rattling a window pane on the exterior of their hotel room, underwent the startling experience of watching a rapidly opened set of blinds revealing the Lennon sisters, in dainty pajamas, holding raised wooden hotel room hangers poised for combat.
As symbols of what is best in America, the sisters drew the whole spectrum of attention. Publishers produced coloring books and children's novels. And at the peak of popularity, they may have been the all time target of mendacious scandal tabloids, a situation they handled with humor. More catastrophically, a severely mentally ill man did strike tragedy on the family when he killed William Lennon, father and business manager to the sisters, the family patriarch, a man who knew how to be a proper patriarch by loving his family intensely. A testament to the incredible strength of this family, prayers for the killer were made at the wake.
I am writing these comments at a time when a sociological study is being publicized that describes how average personal net worth achieved in later life is inversely proportional to the size of a family from which one emerges. The study's authors seem to believe that the success of families is measured in affluence rather than the character of its members. The truth that the moral strength of a nation exists in direct proportion to the strength of family life rather than government schemes of social engineering is an insight cynical politicians manage to constantly mangle and more-enlightened-than-thou academics manage to constantly seek to undermine. But the inspiration of becoming a temporary member of such a beautiful family is a tour de force of anti-cynicism, a graceful expression and invitation on how to live life better.

A Walk Down Memory Lane

As a young girl, I had to watch Lawrence Welk every Saturday with my parents, since we only had one television that my dad controlled. I disliked it tremendously except for the Lennon Sisters. I was so envious of their talent and beauty and believed that they must be quite wealthy. Little did I know how poor their family was. Reading the sisters memoirs was quite revealing and entertaining. My only complaint is that they really told very little about their marriages - both the success and failures. I'm not sure why Kathy refused to name her first husband when everyone who watched them grow up knew she married a band member who was substantially older. So did Peggy and at the time it was quite troublesome for these young girls to marry men very much older. Peggy's marriage was a success and Kathy's ended in divorce, as did Janet's marriage to a man closer to her own age. In the book, Janet merely says she and her husband decided to separate after 10 years but nothing about an actual divorce. Then toward the end of the book she is re-married with no discussion about the lead up to the new marriage. There are a lot of pictures but I was disappointed that none of their wedding pictures were included, since I can remember the movie magazines at the time printed photos for all of us teenage fans to see. This book was published in 1985 so 28 years have elapsed since publication. Obviously there is nothing about their careers on the stages at Branson, Missouri. I occasionally watch Lawrence Welk re-runs on PBS and even watch view some videos on You Tube just to get a nostalgic fix to take me back to my childhood. This book was a pleasant walk down memory lane.

The Amazing Sweethearts of Song - The Lennon Sisters!!!

This is in my opinion the greatest autobiography ever written because it is the collective memories of four wonderful women - Dianne (Dee Dee), Peggy, Kathy, and Janet Lennon. America watched them grow up from little girls to young women on the Lawrence Welk Show, and now for the first time America can relive those wonderful days while reading along as Dee Dee, Peggy, Kathy, and Janet share their memories. The girls take you on a "sentimental journey" with them as they remember their childhood growing up as the oldest four in a family of eleven, their exciting days on the Lawrence Welk Show, and so many more touching and inspiring memories, both good and bad. This book will make you laugh as well as cry, and it is asured to make you love the Lennon Sisters even more.

It's Kennedy-bashing time again, as rich-and-venal chronicler Dunne (An Inconvenient Woman, etc.) drags writer-hero Harrison Burns through 20 years of guilt for having helped our most prominent Irish Catholic family cover up a sex murder by its fair-haired scion. After a brief peek ahead--naughty talk, dirty pictures, and several murders are all mentioned in the first four pages--it's 1972, and Harrison is mysteriously infatuated with prep-school chum Constant Bradley, a plausible cipher who can get aroused only when he's beating up his dates. When Constant's unwanted attentions to Winifred Utley leave her dead on the family estate, Harrison reluctantly helps cover up his guilt, allowing himself to be bought off (``My soul was lost, but my future was bought and paid for'') by Constant's wealthy, ruthless father Gerald (no slouch at covering up his own sex crimes) with the connivance of Constant's slimy, crippled brother Jerry. (Hovering piously on the fringes: Constant's impossibly devout mother Grace, his successful brothers Desmond and Sandro, and his sisters Maureen and Mary Pat, who never mention their retarded, institutionalized sister Agnes.) Then it's 1989, and Harrison, visiting a Maine nursing home to cover one of his true-crime expos‚s, runs into Constant's sister Kitt, visiting crazy Agnes, immediately starts a torrid affair with Kitt, and allows himself to be lured back into the Bradley orbit by the offer to ghostwrite a saccharine family bio to launch Constant's gubernatorial bid. So in 1993, Harrison looks back over the long-delayed trial--and its inevitable outcome. Dunne may see himself as another F. Scott Fitzgerald, chronicling the moral corruption of the well-to-do (references to Gatsby passim). But the main pleasures here involve nothing more moving than watching a wily old pro set up characters with as much individuality as ninepins preparatory to bowling them down. I avoided this book for a long time, under the mistaken belief that it was just another potboiler, taking advantage of a tragedy to make a bestseller. Not so, I found upon reading it. In fact, the book is based only loosely on the Moxley murder and has a life all its own. The relationship the sometime narrator has with an obscenely wealthy, powerful, immoral family is far more interesting than the murder, which is at the center of the narrative. Dunne does not come across as a great novelist, if one judges him by his TV interviews. This book is not at all befuddled. Dunne knew exactly what he was doing with every word.

About the Author

Morten Tolstrup is the Director of TE Wireless Group, International Service & Solutions. Prior to working for LGC/ADC/TE he spent 13 years in a number of different engineering positions with a mobile operator in Denmark, mainly focusing on indoor RF planning, tunnels, Airports, Pico-cells and micro cells. Over the past 15 years Morten has presented more than 50 papers and workshops at conferences around the world.

Exactly as the authors says: Not for scientists

We all know there's no avoiding the complex math behind the engineering; it serves a purpose right? But if you want to get a real 'hands-on', practical and with very well simple graphics and visuals in the world of DAS and Indoor systems, this is the book for you. The author is very humble yet to the point, making a very effective transition between the complicated to the "making sense". Moreover, having been in the world of CDMA and CDMA2000 and EVDO for years now, the initial topics on GSM, UMTS are a big plus, especially with LTE here now to stay! This book is well worth the price. Any DAS or In building RF Eng needs this one as part of his/her shelf resources.

Covers all the bases

This is a great book that I would highly recommend to any DAS engineer. As the other reviewer mentioned, it is written with an engineer in mind, not a scientist. Any office that works on these type of systems would be well served by having a copy of this book. I like that it starts at square one with basic repeater driven systems and evolves to cover advanced designs like elevator shafts and subway tunnels. This makes it of value to the new guy on the team as well as the seasoned veteran.

Baker and Bonjour lead you step-by-step through a survey of western-tradition analytical philosophy, full of humor and insight, excellent primary sources, and unbelievably lucid commentary. Their method is very accessible, and even a raw beginner can quickly find him/herself immersed in philosophical inquiry without feeling lost. They take a topic the average American finds very esoteric, and show not only how relevant it is, but how anyone can do it. An excellent choice for someone who wants to get a grip on philosophy but feels daunted by traditional approaches, or wants to learn on their own.
