Reading Again
By Althea Jones
I have not found time to just sit and read in a LONG time. I have begun reading this before bed and actually have to stop myself from reading into the night. I got this when it first came out and am re-reading it years later. The detail it perfect and just enough to picture it in your own way. you get excited for her and feel for the characters through out the stories. The chapters are short so you can pick it up and read in the inbetween moments too, without feeling like you have to commit or will get left hanging.

Great
By Lisa J
Judy Blume has always been one of my favorite authors, ever since I was starting 4th grade and picked up "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing." I'm glad that she also has a few adult books. "Wifey" follows the life of a married, stay at home mother of two, during 1970. She isn't happy with her life, and struggles to try and change some things. "Smart Women" takes the side of a divorced mother of two with a steady job in the 1970's. This woman is trying to balance her children, a new love, and her friends.

WIFEY / SMART WOMEN
By Annie
I really like Judy Blume - Wifey, I had no idea what this book was all about so I was surprised the more I read. The only thing about it was that someone wrote: Hide this book from your kids. I guess that's a good idea. Even though I liked it because the way she writes, you do not want to put the book down.
Smart Women - This one I enjoyed very much and must say I will read again, even though I really don't read books twice. This was another book you don't want to put down because you absolutely want to find out what happens next.
Right now Ii am on a hunt for more Judy Blume's books because I like her writing so very much.

Blood-Dark Track: A Family History, by Joseph O'Neill

From the bestselling and PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author of Netherland, a fascinating, personal, and beautifully crafted family history.

Joseph O'Neill's grandfathers--one Turkish, one Irish--were both imprisoned for suspected subversion during the Second World War. The Irish grandfather, a handsome rogue from a family of small farmers, was an active member of the IRA. O'Neill's other grandfather, a debonair hotelier from the tiny and threatened Turkish Christian minority, was interned by the British in Palestine on suspicion of being an Axis spy.

With intellect, compassion, and grace, O'Neill sets the stories of these individuals against the history of the last century's most inhuman events.

From Publishers Weekly
The son of a Turkish mother and an Irish father, lawyer and novelist O'Neill was born in Ireland, raised in the Hague, spent summers in his mother's hometown on the Mediterranean and studied in Britain. When he was 10 or 11, in the mid-1970s, he learned that both of his late grandfathers were imprisoned during WWII. Twenty years later, he took it upon himself to learn why. The quest to determine whether his IRA-soldier grandfather was a murderer and his Turkish grandfather, a hotelier, was an Axis spy took him from County Cork to the coast of Turkey, and deep into the "dream-bright horrors" of history. O'Neill's Irish grandfather, jailed for five years for IRA activities, shared an internment camp with Nazi and Allied POWs held there "in accordance with Ireland's neutrality policy." At the same time, his Turkish grandfather suffered psychological abuse and extreme paranoia in various British and Free French military prisons filled with Lebanese, Turkish and Syrian " `suspects and known pro-Axis sympathizers.' " During his research, O'Neill collected facts about everything from the poison used to eliminate the fungus that destroyed the Irish potato crop in the late 1840s to ethnic divisions among Armenians, Muslims and non-Muslim Turks in pre-WWII Turkey. Anyone interested in the Middle East, Ireland or WWII will find this account fascinating. Readers looking for tension, family drama and pathos, however, may be frustrated with the undifferentiated details and narrative detours that sometimes encumber this story of a grandson trying to connect with the grandfathers he never knew. From Library Journal
O'Neill, a novelist (The Breezes) and lawyer, writes a compelling family history interwoven with the politics of World War II. O'Neill sought the reasons for the internment of his Turkish and Irish grandfathers during the war, Jim O'Neill in an infamous camp in Ireland, Joseph Dadak by Britain in Palestine. He easily finds his Irish grandfather's IRA history. His Turkish grandfather seems a genuine victim until O'Neill digs deep and, like the British, suspects him of espionage. This is a voyage of self-exploration, a grandson coming to terms with family history previously forbidden. While the reader may not find the denouement as gratifying as did the author, the journey is worth the price. O'Neill's adventures in genealogy and the interviews he pursued keep the reader drawn close. Useful for academic libraries and recommended for public libraries, especially those with Middle East concentrations. Robert Moore, Framingham, MA
Copyright 2001 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Both O’Neill’s grandfathers, one Turkish Christian, one Irish Catholic, were imprisoned by the British during World War II. What had they done wrong? In researching their stories, O’Neill discovers secrets, personal and political, and his gripping family memoir also reveals a seldom-told bloody history. All the detail gets confusing at times as the author visits the prisons and delves into letters, newspaper reports, official documents, and family stories. But the muddle and mystery of spies and counterspies are part of the authentic narrative. O’Neill’s father’s father, James O’Neill, joined the IRA. Was he complicit with Nazi Germany? Or was he an informer for the British? Were they planting information on him? The maternal grandfather, Joseph Dakak, was arrested on a business trip to Palestine and spent more than three years in prison there. Does a just war justify undeserved personal suffering? Was Dakak paranoid to think his fellow prisoners were informers? The political issues are sure to spark intense debate, but more than that, it is the “miserable small story” of individual lives that holds the reader. --Hazel Rochman

Too long; foundation doesn't support ending
By D. C. Carrad
I loved many, many parts of this book. It is extremely well-written and thoughtful and interesting to a fault (kept me up late some nights) and I would have given it five stars at the halfway mark. However, it is simply 25 to 30% too long and would have benefited greatly from some judicious editing, particularly toward the end of the book. This is not just a complaint about length -- the political musings become ramblings and then become pedantic meanderings toward the end and all the great philosophical "at last I have found the meaning of life" screeds get tiresome very quickly. Author takes what are really coincidences about the lives of two of his two grandfathers and tries to read too much meaning to them. I would still enthusiastically recommend that you buy and read this book, just start skimming in the back half when he gets too tendentious, and you will enjoy it greatly.

Details, Details, Details
By jean chases
This is not a book that you would stumble across. I picked it up because I loved "Netherland" by the same author. And, I found the same attention to detail in this book that I was so attracted to in "Netherland".

O'Neill is a great writer with an almost unbelievable command of English. In this book, he tries to " find himself" through finding his grandfathers, one Irish, one Turkish/Syrian. What a combination! The action takes place mostly during the Second World War in Ireland and Turkey, although we get a good lesson in history before that time--- not didactic, just interesting.

Ostensibly, O'Neill wants to know how both men came to be incarcerated during the war. As criminals! Were they spies? Yes and No.

We get wonderful, unique descriptions of the countryside. Wonderful descriptions of the men and their families. And, we get philosophy. We do not get a hagiographic viewpoint. This, in itself, is a feat in a work like this.

Enjoy O'Neill's writing; you'll find it worth your time.

Brilliant tale of darkness and historical "truth"
By Mick Gold
This is a brilliant book. The author searches for the reasons why his two grandfathers - one Irish, one Turkish - both ended up in prison during the Second World War. His Turkish grandfather, Joseph Dakad, was interned by the British in Palestine on suspicion of spying for the Germans. His Irish grandfather, Jim O'Neill, was interned by his own government in the Curragh as a member of the IRA. By subtly intercutting the two stories, the book looks at nationalism in two very different contexts - the polyglot post-Ottoman culture of Turkey in the years between the two world wars, and the hidden story of Irish republicanism between De Valera coming to power and the resumption of The Troubles in 1966. In searching for the reasons why these two very different men were interned, O'Neill illuminates the unspoken ideas of nationalism and individuality that permeate (like DNA)the two sides of his family. While he sifts through British intelligence reports on "undesirable" activity in Jerusalem, and discovers who really murdered Admiral Somerville in West Cork in 1936, O'Neill's book is shot through with contemporary echoes of his grandfathers' ordeals. As the author watches Bernadette Sands reject the Good Friday Agreement in the name of Ireland's republican martyrs, and questions Yitzhak Shamir about the morality of political assassination, we realise that the ghosts of these men still haunt today's headlines, and our ancestors can assume the power of an unconscious force over our political reflexes.

"There is such pain and such beauty in Stay, and there are so many astonishing moments of what I can only call distilled reverie, I feel nothing short of awe after reading this collection. McGookey's poems shimmer with a profound sense of love and loss and wonder. Each one is like a section of stained glass window. Together they are an illumination." -Nin Andrews

A stunning collection
By demerson19
Death and life have long been tied together in literature, a reflection of our shared experience. One of the strongest connections between the two is grief when life transfers into death and love takes on the lens of loss. All these elements emerge strongly in Kathleen McGookey's stunning book of poems, Stay. From the loss of children not yet born, to the loss of parents long lived, McGookey struggles to retain what is lost and to accept what is left.

McGookey writes prose poems, allowing her the freedom to develop her thoughts while using the fragmentation of poetry to create lines of depth. In "Shallow" she describes a living moon. "She is pinned to the sky, unapproachable: to be aloof, to be cold and disinterested and not afraid if anyone knows is a decent strategy." McGookey clearly does not emulate these traits, and so her poems reach out to the reader.

We listen as McGookey interprets life through the decision of becoming a mother, and then the mother who does not conceive. In "Again" she opens with: "Never conceived, never arrived into the light and the clatter and the chill. Never rapt, like a statue. Never arrived for the slap..." She is grieving the loss of the life never created with the same intensity we grieve the loss of those who die. In both situations, we are left with an absence. One carries memories and the other possibilities, but neither are tangible no matter how much they are experienced.

She is continually struck by the grief and horror an individual can experience that does not impact the world. How life seems to go on all around you as your own life falls apart. In "Like Stars" she describes an awe-inspiring evening setting full of the life of insects and birds, and ends with the line: "Right now my friend is having a baby boy who is expected to die." In "Sometimes the Ache Sleeps" we see her facing her parent's declining health, "But each day the purple morning glories bloomed after the sun rose, and each day promised to be just like the one before." At times, the poet seems to be torn between the thankfulness for ongoing life and being stunned that all the world does not understand your grief. But grief, while universally experienced, is a private affair.

The title poem expresses a theme found throughout these poems. The longing to hang on to what we had while having what is changing. She wants to stay with her ailing mom, who sends her up to her husband. But they only trade places so the husband cares for her mother while she nurses her child. We have a desire to keep what we have, yet we want what we do not have. You cannot care for your dying mother and your young son at the same time. We desire change and we desire to stay in our place.

Clearly, this collection is full of much pain. But she does not lose herself in the pain. She acknowledges it, struggles with it, but still recognizes the beauty around her. She seems in awe of life, wanting to experience it from a distance but finding herself an active part of it. When no hope seems left, she finds it in a note from her mother, the unconditional love of her child, or in the vision of a teenage boy with one leg water skiing and looking for girls in bikinis.

Crafting the Courage to Stay
By Glassworks Magazine
Katie Budris:
Kathleen McGookey’s words are brave. She begins her latest collection, Stay, with a quote by Gary Young: “The worst thing you can imagine is not the worst thing that can happen to you.” And yet, worse for McGookey translates to great for the reader. Her bravery comes across on every page, not as a battle cry or manifesto, but slowly, quietly, in the most unassuming way. The vulnerability permeating each poem is, perhaps, the bravest words can be.
As a woman who relates to the early poems in Stay, I am immediately hooked. The speaker, an adult woman, presumably McGookey herself, is surrounded by children and isn’t sure she wants one. And she isn’t shy about revealing her hesitancies. She fears what many women fear, but which most of us are ashamed to say aloud: that if she couldn’t even grow vegetables, how could she possibly care for a child? Or worse, that she isn’t the heroine of her own story.

McGookey presents these fears unflinchingly through a combination of metaphor, imagery, and direct narrative. In a first person poem, “More Expectations,” the speaker and her partner wonder what they are saving or waiting for in life, the first indication in the collection our heroine might be trying to have a child: “We’d picnicked near a field, not golden and alive in the wind, but plowed and not yet planted, not opportunity, just work, hard work and the unelegant sun.” This desolate nature imagery resurfaces in “The Accident,” when a childless wife wonders if she has made the right choice by not having kids: “Red dust from the road gathered in her kitchen’s corners while she dreamed of ropes and coyotes.”

Just in case we miss these implications, McGookey occasionally tells it like it is, the second poem in the collection opening boldly with: “The heroine doesn’t know if she wants a child. What kind of story is this?” (“Lament”). She further compounds her uncertainty by connecting to the world around her too, as she shocks the reader by ending what appears to be a simple poem about the night sky revealing: “Right now my friend is having a baby boy who is expected to die” (“Like Stars”). Her directness is both stunning and appreciated. And the fears she expresses must be common, because I am right there with her in every word although society tells us women we should not feel these things, should not say them aloud.

In keeping with the style of her previous work, McGookey writes entirely in prose poem form. This lends itself well to the confessional nature of each poem as she admits, “Writing’s more private than birth” (“Birth Poem”). Almost half the poems have single word titles, such as “Shallow,” “Wish,” “Waiting,” and “Onion,” implying simplicity. Yet, while each poem is intensely focused, the dichotomies of life and death, joy and sorrow, acceptance and anger, are anything but. Just as easily as McGookey confesses the forbidden complexities of life and womanhood, her fear shifts; maybe she does want a child, but maybe she can’t have one. New fears arise coated in grief as the poems progress through frustration, failed and then unexpectedly successful attempts to conceive, and the declining health and death of both her parents.

To be clear: while she expresses deep fears, the tone of her work is not fearful. Perhaps uncertain is a more appropriate term, or inquisitive. She crafts the poems in such a way that it seems she is consistently in control of her emotional experience. Especially intriguing is McGookey’s recurring personification of “My Anger.” The aptly titled poem near middle of the collection asserts, “Today I sent My Anger to yoga at 5 a.m... When she came home, she slammed the dishwasher and threw bruised apples and stale chips in our lunch bags.” As she struggles with her parents’ illness and her own mortality, she attempts to harness her anger in this way, willing it to submit to a series of yoga poses, or to a serving of coffee and chocolate, but with tempered success. Still, the poem itself is not angry. She describes the anger the was a psychiatrist might, asking you to envision your anger as some other being you could leave outside the door or lock in a box that you might move on with your life, free of this burden. Later, in section III of the collection, in the midst of a pastoral moment of description, she states matter of factly, “I almost forget My Anger out there in all that green” (“My Anger at Home”). McGookey is curiously aware of her own anger, allowing bits of beauty and peace to shine through even the most trying experiences.

Throughout the course of this collection, McGookey experiences the full span of the life cycle: from the birth of her first child to the illness and death of both her parents. “When would the gentleness come?” she asks, and we wonder the same (“Almost Sweet”). Somehow, it does. Not all at once, but as gentleness does, in small doses over time. By the end, we feel we have been through the trenches with McGookey, emerging on the other side where “grief is barely a shadow now” (“Here, Where I Am, in October”), where we hope to stay.

My Absolute Favorite Christmas Arrangements
By JBebe
As a classically-trained pianist I sometimes find new-age music a bit cheesy and not of the best quality of writing. Liz Story's music is definitely not either of those. Her style is a mix of new age improvisation and jazz. It is incredibly well-written, classy, and gorgeous. She has some new and original takes on the old classics.

These arrangements are some of my absolute favorites to play during the holidays. Some personal favorites in this collection include the beautiful, introspective "Angels We Have Heard On High" with its thick chords and harmonies, the medleys "Bring A Torch/When Blossoms Flowerd Mid the Snow" and "O Come Little Children/We'll Dress the House," and my absolute favorite "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" - this rendition is gorgeous with its jazzy harmonies.

I would recommend this book to any pianist. Also, for non-Christmas compositions of Story's, try Liz Story - Volume 1 - Piano (New Age Series).
