Encouraging and helpful for beginners from 8 to 80

At 38, I was convinced that I could never learn to draw. However, I found this book on the shelf of the local bookstore and decided to give it a try. What was there to lose? Only my conviction that I could never learn to draw, as it turns out! While I still cannot claim real skill at drawing without following the steps, at least I can now produce a reasonable reproduction of what I see on the pages of an Ames book. It's great fun and I'd encourage anyone who was ever told that perhaps drawing wasn't for them to pick up this (or any other Ames drawing book) and prepare for a most pleasant surprise!

Ever wanted to draw?

Another educational Lee J. Ames book. Line by curve, andstepby step the reader is drawn into the world of vehicle drawing.Anyone will find it easy to follow the sequential pictures and draw all sorts of fascinating models. I used this book some time ago and even though I don't remember the name of a single model and the book is long lost, I have continued to be artistic. Lee J. Ames helps the reader in the same way that studying with one of the Old Masters would help an art student. By emulating the style of an excellent teacher, the student can excel. This book is an easy first step in the wonderful world of art.

Intense

The story opens up with Jane attending doctors meetings to discuss the removal of a nail that is lodged in her skull. Something that doesn't seem to surprise her as she has lived through several other near-death situations throughout her young life. Electrocution, poisoning and a near miss by a train.

Although Jane's parents have known her whole life she is prone to "accidents" Jane knows that it is something else, something that is a part of her that is causing her accidents. Her Shadow. She has only been able to reveal the truth about what is happening to her best friend Lexi, who has an attraction to the dark, goth and creep herself. She is an artist with an open mind and helps Jane piece together what could possibly be happening to her.

A ghost story that involves a kind of possession that is beyond the here and now. A very fast paced read that has great character dynamics. I loved the relationship that Lexi and Jane share. But also the caring, supportive and healthy relationship she has with her parents.

There is no swearing in the book, but it does contain some scenes and references to violence and abuse.

creepy and entertaining

Beyond offers up a perfectly creepy ghost story with a twist that should delight young readers. McNamee delivered a tale filled with creepy goodness involving a ghost and a killer. This was a fast paced, easy read and I was thoroughly entertained.

The tale begins when we meet Jane. She has had several near death accidents and the most recent has her walking around with a nail in her head. Her parents think she is accident prone, others think she is suicidal but Jane knows the truth. Jane lives with her doting parents. Her Mom owns a Flower shop and her Dad is the local sheriff. They call Jane their miracle baby, because Jane wasn't breathing at birth. Since then there have been dozens of accident. Jane's parents worry about her, and encourage her to be safe, but they don't know that Jane's own shadow is trying to kill her! The tale that unfolds is suspenseful as Jane and Lexi try to stop her shadow and maybe even a killer.

Jane and Lexi refer to themselves as the "Creep Sisters". Due to all of her strange near death situations, kids at school tend to stare at, gossip about or ignore Jane. She sleepwalks, cannot drive and begins having nightmares that become day-mares. She has a love interest and it is delightfully sweet. Lexi is her outspoken, confident friend who dresses like the grim reaper's daughter. She loves her camera and film. I liked her quirky, humorous attitude and would have loved her as a friend. She is the perfect friend for Jane and the two had me laughing. I loved that the parents were involved in Jane's life, although she never confided in them about her shadow. The shadow and an unearthed body made the tale creepy and suspenseful.

McNamee wove a suspenseful ghost story and I liked the twists he brought to it. I won't spoil anything, but the shadow and the how and why, was cool. I also liked the secondary plot and how it all tied together. The ending scenes were climatic, followed by some closure. This book is the perfect introduction to horror for young readers. I thought the tale was well paced and clever. It is relatively short in length. The hardcover addition is roughly 226 pages but it offered up some creepy suspense perfect for the fall "spooky" season.

Beyond is perfect for young readers in search of a creepy ghost story. I enjoyed McNamee's writing style and look forward to checking out some of his other works.

I'm not entirely sure why I requested this as horror freaks me out but I do like ghost stories and I am trying to be braver. From the start, I found myself intrigued immediately connecting with the writing style.

I can't share too much about the plot as that is so integral to enjoying the story for yourself. Basically Jane has a shadow that is trying to kill herself. But I can also say that everything builds on itself, making for a more multi-layered story and increasing the stakes. As a horror story, it starts out deceptively calm with passages increasingly taking a turn for the creepy as we go to the big climax and conclusion.

One of the elements that I really appreciated was Jane's friendship with Lexi. Lexi unquestioningly accepts Jane and her weirdness and the two provide vital support to each other during the difficult teenage years in addition to the bizarre things that are affecting Jane. I loved that friendship played such a prominent role with just a sprinkle of romance in appropriate places.

Another part I loved was the inclusion of ghosts; I don't want to get too specific but I loved some of the imagery around there. I also really appreciated that this was a standalone with good resolution. Loose ends were wrapped up and we know where people are. Those who survive to the end can look optimistically to the future, which is how I like my books to end.

Overall: A twisty intense emotional thrill-ride with a compelling main character and an awesome best friend.

Cover: Very scary-I actually feel like a more subtle cover would have been appropriate because of the way that the story rises.

I couldn't put the book down! The information in this book is well researched; you can verify the book's contents by the click of a mouse. Although this book is written by a die-hard researcher his phraseology makes the book an easy read. He gets right to the facts w/o out carelessly wasting paper and ink to prove his case. Lee Cummings closes the coffin in this volume, believe that! He accomplishes what he set out to do & that is proving Hebrew History w/o using the "Hebrew's Book" (i.e. the Scriptures) as primary source. In this book Mr. Cummings allows history, archeology and first-hand eyewitnesses to represent and defend his case. This book is truly inestimable in its value & I advise you to add this one to your library.

Fine Mid-Level Commentary

This is the author's second commentary in the last decade on 1 Corinthians, the first being 1100 pages longer! If you want and have time to work through a masterful commentary (and likely the new standard for scholars), the longer NIGCT is the one to go with. If on the other hand 300+ pages is enough for you (and it should be for most, as well-presented as it is here), then this "shorter" treatment should suffice. More pastoral in its application than the larger volume.

Quality on Every Single Page. Unique, Valuable.

I'm a professor/musician at an evangelical university. I've read his 1400 page commentary (yes! even though I don't know Greek) as well as this shorter, yet distinctive version of around 250 pages. Both are unique, different. Both represent a tremendous effort.

I've spent many, many hours with Thiselton. My understanding has grown immeasurably, thanks to this dedicated, gifted evangelical scholar. I feel that I've gotten to know him. He's exceptionally good with language, and in communicating the finest distinctions of meaning, as well as the important broader themes and emphases in I Cor.

It interesting that quotation marks (" ) do not occur in the original Greek. However, in I Cor ch 8 (and other places) Thiselton's use of quotation marks results in insightful interpretations. I note that the ESV version (and the more recent translations) now employ the same technique.

About 6-8 of us guys have been having a home bible study together for 18 years, meeting every 2nd and 4th tuesday. We study one chapter of the bible per meeting, and we're continuing with chapter 8 of I Cor in two weeks. I put up Thiselton's unique translation on my TV screen (via my MAC) for us all to consider (one of my contributions). The guys really appreciate the perspective the translation offers. A lot of animated, lively discussion ensues. Thank you Anthony! You're efforts are reaching a bunch of guys in California.

Fantastic balance of scholarly research with real life application

This commentary is one of the best I've seen on any book of the Bible. Thistleton gives great background to unpack the context of the Corinthian church. Makes the text come alive. Probably the best part of his approach in this commentary is the follow up questions at the end of each section.
I found myself reading these questions first then going back to do the reading/research. I'd highly recommend this commentary to anyone who is planning on teaching/studying this letter from Paul any time soon.
