But despite my determination to become a better singer, my voice—once naturally strong and capable—was rendered weak, reedy, and wobbly. It was only after creating my voice-building system—a program guided by reliable and tested scientific ideas—that I fully understood the errors of my teachers’ ways and was able to build into my voice new power, resonance, and range. As I began teaching a wide range of singers, and observing the spectacular improvement in their vocal quality and vocal ability, I soon realized that introducing my revolutionary voice-building system to the world was going to be my life’s mission.

Forget everything you learned about singing

Having extensively practiced with a multitude of singing programs and teachers, I came away learning more with each one. However, after reading through this book I realized that in order to further develop my voice I would have to unlearn all the information I accrued in the past - from lip bubbles and "NG," "MMM, and "Nay"-nasal sort of exercises, to singing in the mask and deploying diaphragm support. It became abruptly clear as to why I had never heard of Gary Catona - his system contradicted mainstream singing ideology so much it bordered on esoteric. The irony is that everyone can benefit from these simple exercises.

Catona is one of the few modern voice teachers whose exercises reside solely in the five Italian vowels. This immediately gives him credibility in the current milleu. The system is comparable to weight-training in that your voice is a muscle to be coordinated and built, using weights (the vowels) to increase stress and become stronger. The only other other vocal teacher I am aware of who uses his weight-training analogy is Anthony Frisell, who emphasizes a top-down falsetto method. Catona, on the other hand, deploys a bottom-up chest voice method whereby the singer sings from the back of the throat with a lowered larynx. (It is also interesting to note that Catona lost his voice as a result of falsetto training. Kindred spirits in ideology, polar opposites in execution - think Ralph Nader and Ron Paul.)

The first time I practiced sliding these vowels in the back of my throat, I felt a vocal resonance, deepness, and power in my voice - speaking and singing alike - that I never experienced before. In my opinion, this experience is comparable to "the pump" so often spoken of in weight training - impressive to behold, but merely a temporary display. Thus, after just a month of training with this system, it becomes imperative to continue practicing.

What I disliked about book is that it seems secondary to the new voice builder app, which includes demonstrations of all the exercises. Because I do not have an iPhone or iPad, I resorted to buying an American Idol singing DVD that included demonstrations. As a manifesto, the book contains so much valuable information and insights that I have to give it five stars. Highly recommended to anyone seeking a superior path to building your voice.

Advice From A Top Vocal Teacher

I had been searching for a teacher who believes, as I do, that the voice is a muscle and like any other muscle needs to be developed. The book explains the foundation of Mr. Catona's voice building system. Is this a technique for everyone? Perhaps not, but I throughly enjoyed it and definitely have benefitted by reading it. I was surprised to find out how different Mr. Catona felt about different aspects of singing, compared to other teachers but that willingness to stand up and defend his differences of opinion, made it all the more enjoyable. Vocal technique has got to be one of the most multi-opinionated topics known to man. It was great to read something from someone who believed so strongly in the effectiveness of their technique.

Great Method, Wonderfully Written Book

I am a professional singer and have been a student of Gary's for twenty years. His method has enabled me to maintain a healthy voice and to sing with ease throughout my range. Singing is very much an athletic event, so during the initial phases of applying this technique there may be some slight gruffness (for lack of a better term). But when one begins any workout routine that is to be expected. That quickly gives way to results, and those results accrue at a steady pace. For me, they manifested themselves almost immediately during my first concert sung after beginning Gary's technique. I suggest that anybody who reports a problem is singing incorrectly, exactly the kind of thing that Gary's technique will prevent. Furthermore, his presentation of how and why this technique is correct is both entertaining and convincing. The voice, hidden inside you, is an instrument of mystery. In this book Gary Catona dissolves that mystery.

Excellent Math Starter but need a workbook

This book introduces the 1st Grade Math concepts very well, however you will need a workbook to have your first grader practice the concepts introduced to them.

great for what it is.

our son struggles with math facts, so i thought this would be a great way to help him really *dig in* & get those facts, as opposed to the spiral approach. we used primary mathematics 1a & 1b in 1st grade, but our little non-math-brain child did not get along well with this approach. we switched to saxon math (spiral approach) at the end of these books, & have seen his confidence rebuilt. this would be a great program for a child without our son's math disability.

Concept Heavy, Practice Light, Overly Cutesy

I am comparing this book to my daughter's public school math book (Houghton-Mifflin Expression) and another grade one book we have, from the German Zahlenland program.

This book has less practice than any other book. The average page has about 4 problems. The print and pictures are large. It is entirely in black and white. With word problems, sometimes there are only two problems (with a sub-problem each) to solve.

Conceptually, the book asks a lot of first graders. It asks them to look at a picture, say, with three or four groups off people totaling eight, and to tell a story about these people that can be written as a number sentence that fits the pattern below. Then, below, they will have boxes arranged in a number sentence like:

__ - __ = 5

So the child must determine the total, figure out how to make a story to fit the sentence and the scene depicted, and fill it in. This is much more conceptual than in my daughter's German book, and somewhat more conceptual than her Expressions book.

Based on what I see in my own kids, I do not see this as a good fit for the child who learns by doing. There is not enough doing for such a child to pick up the pattern. On the other hand, I believe that it would be an excellent supplement for such a child to really dig into the concepts behind arithmetic, particularly if the child was in a classical repetition-based program.

For a child who rejects repetition and who likes to examine the "whys" of math, this book would probably be a great fit, albeit a bit easy.

I really think more repetition is necessary to really internalize math facts for the vast majority of children, even very bright children (IQ 125-145). I'm not into rote learning, but I do think there is a point at which you want to stop having the child visualize everything and start having them do more complex computation and this book will not get every child to that point.

Conceptually, it is also different to the other books in an important way. Our German and American workbooks have strong ones and tens focus. Lots of grouping. The German book is one of the highest rated in Germany, a country which maintains high international scores in math in spite of a large immigrant, non-native-speaking population. They still have significant repetition and importantly use tens grouping from the moment you add sums greater than ten. The German book does it differently than the American book but it is there. This book (1a) does not have that.

I know that Singapore consistently does well internationally on tests. But Singapore is a restricted city state with a mere 6 million people. Germany achieves very high results in a much more diverse, dispersed population over ten times as large. I only point this out because I know that Singapore math achieved prominence due to its high scores on international measures. So as someone with books from both countries, I thought I'd share my opinion on how the Singapore book might not be as good, in spite if Singapore's excellent test results.

Sadly the German book we own cannot be recommended as it is not available in English.

This is followed by a brief history of the Canela that clarifies how the network of the kinship system holds the society together, and how the unusual sex practices create satisfying bonds among the people. The case study also shows how the practice of rituals affirms the group way of life for the individual. Many contemporary influences have caused the gradual demise of the Canela way of life. The case study concludes with an epilogue on the Canela's future adaptation to Brazilian life.

About the Author
Bill Crocker graduated from Yale University in 1950 and was the first of George Spindler's students to earn his M.A. in anthropology from Stanford in 1953. He completed his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin at Madison in 1962, having made the first of many visits to the Canela in 1957. In 1962, he joined the Smithsonian Institution as Associate Curator for South American Ethnology in the Department of Anthropology of the National Museum of Natural History. He continued his study of the Canela, making 20 trips to the field over the years, totaling 74 months of living with the tribe. Although Bill has missed teaching, he appreciates the opportunity for intensive and long-term research his career at the Smithsonian has provided. He is the author of numerous articles on the Canela, and in 1990 his comprehensive monograph, THE CANELA (EASTERN TIMBIRA), I: AN ETHNOGRAPHIC INTRODUCTION appeared as number 33 in the Smithsonian Contributions to Anthropology series. Bill's work also contributed to the 1999 video on the Canela, MENDING WAYS, and to an extensive Canela website, launched in 2002, that is linked to the Smithsonian anthropology's web system. In 2001, Bill spent three months with the Canela, and he hopes to spend a few weeks every other year with them, continuing the study of long term cultural change.

Jean Galloway Thomas married Bill in 1987 and has since collaborated informally with him as an editor. She earned her B.A. in English from Stanford in 1960 and her M.A. in English from Georgetown University in 1971. She taught literature and writing in college preparatory schools for 20 years. Jean accompanied Bill on his 1991 trip to Brazil and lived with the Canela for three weeks. For this case study, and its revision, Jean used her teaching experience to orient the text for the college student. She helped organize the material and wrote some sections. Since Bill is the anthropologist, however, Jean has preserved his voice as the single narrative "I."

Great ethnography about a very facinating people.

William and his wife Jean are very successful in executing a both interesting and seemingly accurate investigation of the Canela. Like Chagnon's book Yanomamo, but less harmful,Crocker's, The Canela keeps the reader reading. The introduction sets the scene well and the historical context chapter is helpful in understanding the tribe and its origin. The following chapters on bonding through kinship, ritual and sex are easily understood. I also enjoyed the epilogue which answered a few of my questions on the Canelas current state. All in all, a successful ethnography.

Interesting topic

While I found this book fascinating overall, the writing was rather dry. At times the ethnographer's naivety and bias are somewhat disturbing, but he is ultimately successful in conveying a vivid picture of the Canela. I would recommend this book soley because the topic is very interesting and offers an interesting cross-cultural study.

***Spoilers Included to Explain Review***A bit Rushed but had Potential.

*****Read at your own risk, SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW*****

Addison and Stephen meet in high school but Addison rejected him and caused him misery. Stephen goes on to become successful. He and Addison reconnect and the truth of her actions are revealed. Only, Stephen is living a lie, hiding who he really is from her. He knows her but she doesn't know him as they date. They fall for each other when the real reason behind his high school shame is told.

He leaves Addison and moves on. During a moment of weakness they reconnect. They are forever enter twinned.

Stephen decides to move on with his new life without Addison.

More drama occurs but Addison and Stephen end up with a HEA story.

The drama at the end is rushed with the HEA. Stephen was a jerk near the end and Addison had no back bone and forgave him too quickly in my eyes. He was weeks away from marriage. He treated her like a Jezebel and acted like it was nothing.

Pros:
Drama
Angst
Decent storytelling
Complete story, as far as the plot and conclusion. No sequel!!!

Cons:
This is my first book with this author, but the style needs a bit of work. It was first person, but lacked the flow at times seasoned authors have.
Misuse of 'then and than.' Makes me cringe.
Stephen treated Addison horribly despite her actions toward him when they were teenagers.
The conclusion and HEA was too rushed. He was weeks away and then a day away from marrying another woman that he also loved, but she got back with him in a week. Huh???
Addison had no backbone.

•First-person POV: I love when the hero and heroine offer their perspective as the narrative unfolds.

•Flashbacks: This story begins in the present, takes a trip down memory lane, and then fast-forwards ahead to the present.

•Secrets: One that is really the basis of this narrative. A secret that is so explosive, it could irreparably tear things apart forever.
•Dirty dog ex: I love to hate a good ain’t ish ex.

•Plot Twists: You know the kind that has shaped the way you’ve felt about a person forever, but when the truth comes out, the game completely changes, but when the truth actually comes out…? Yeah, this has it…

•Good hot lovin: Ms. Piaget can write a love scene! They weren’t gratuitous and had me writhing in my seat…

More Like an Obsession

This is the third book from this writer that I've read, the first book I thought was good, the second book, not so much, by the third book I expected her writing to have been much improved, it was in some ways and wasn't in others. There are parts of this book that are bogged down with trivial details, grammar issues and missing words. What was interesting about this book, were the portrayal of the main characters angst, insecurities and their tendency to deceive each other and themselves about their past behaviour. I salute the writer's honesty about Stephen deciding to marry someone else & showing how he had no issues with having sex with his future bride eventhough he was in love with someone else, there was no pretension on his part of him being sexually attracted to his fiance, this was very realistic in my view.

About the Author
Nancy J. Jacobs is Associate Professor in the department of history at Brown University. She has received two teaching awards from Brown University, one for digital innovations (2004) and the Harriet W. Sheridan Award for Distinguished Contribution to Teaching and Learning (2010). She is the creator of the Animated Atlas of African History, a web visualization of African history from the late nineteenth to the early twenty-first century. She is the author of Environment, Power, and Injustice: A South African History (Cambridge, 2003).
