Throw away every other sales book you've ever read.
By Dan Bammes
"People don't buy things for your reasons. They buy things for their reasons, and if you want to sell them something, you have to find out what their reasons are and work with them." That's a paraphrase, but it's what I remember from reading No Bull Selling at least 15 years ago. What Hank Trisler wrote then is still universally true. It's a simple toolbox full of useful ideas. He ignores the hocus-pocus and quasi-spirituality that makes so much sales literature nauseating. An extraordinary book that makes only modest claims, but lives up to all of them.

People buy for their reasons, not ours
By Andrew Everett
No Bull Selling offers practical sales advice with a sense of humor. Hank Trisler writes, "I've been going to sales seminars all my adult life. That's how I got so misinformed."

Listening

"People buy for their reasons, not ours, so we have to diagnose before we can prescribe... Feedback lets us be a heat-seeking missile. Wherever the target goes, we can follow."

"Selling is communicating. In the process of effective communication, it is far more important to understand than to be understood." Trisler says that one of the biggest mistakes a salesperson can make is "talking about things that don't interest the customer."

"I'm going to propose to you the 80-20 rule of selling... the customer talks 80 percent of the time and we talk 20 percent. When we talk, we ask questions to cause the customer to talk more... In selling, the pay is far greater for asking the right questions than for knowing the right answers. People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care about them... One of the finest, and shortest, nondirective probes I have ever heard is 'Oh?'"

Objections

"Objections don't get in the way of the sales process; they are a part of the sales process... An objection merely means that the customer is sharing with us a problem, as he sees it." If you argue, you will put the prospect in a defensive position. "The way to deal with objections is to flow with them." To illustrate, Trisler recalls a visit to a Mercedes dealership. "I've been trying to justify the price of a 450SL. They sure cost a lot of money." The dealer replied, "Yeah, they do cost a lot of money, don't they?"

Prospecting

"Prospecting, in my opinion, is well over half the game in selling."

"I believe that the easiest, fastest, most pleasant, and most profitable method of prospecting is getting referrals from our spheres of influence." Trisler categorized his customers as A, B, or C. "An A will send you business, if he remembers you. So never forget an A, and never let an A forget you."

The book includes a Sales Activity Calculator worksheet. This not only determines how many contacts are needed per day in order to meet the sales objective, it puts a dollar value on those contacts. Start with your average earnings per sale. Divide by the average number of presentations per sale. Then divide by the average number of contacts needed to make a presentation. "'You mean I make $9 every time I hand out a card, whether or not they buy?' You got it. Could this realization make prospecting more fun? Every time we contact another warm body, we make money. The amount of money depends on our personal averages... Manage activity, not results."

"I'm going to suggest you sit down before every sales call and make a list of objectives, in descending order of importance." For example: Make a sale; Make another appointment; Get more information about the customer and his problem; Get referrals; Leave an atmosphere conducive to future dialogue. "Now, honestly... can't we get at least one of them? This means that we'll never again 'lose' on a sale; just some days we'll win bigger than others.... It shields our fragile egos from the reality of failure."

Nonverbal Communication

Trisler cites research by Dr. Albert Mehrabian who found that people form opinions based on the following factors:
* 7% verbal (the words we use)
* 38% vocal (how we sound when we say what we say)
* 55% nonverbal (how we look when we say what we say)

"Fifty-five percent of your impact on people is visual... A fine rule is to dress like the people your customers go to for advice... This may make word selection seem unimportant. But let's look at selling today. The competition is tough, so I don't want to be at even a 7 percent disadvantage."

Hank Trisler died in July of 2012 at the age of 75.

Women Suicide Bombers: Narratives of Violence (Routledge Critical Terrorism Studies), by V. G. Julie Rajan

This book offers an evaluation of female suicide bombers through postcolonial, Third World, feminist, and human-rights framework, drawing on case studies from conflicts in Palestine, Sri Lanka, and Chechnya, among others.

Women Suicide Bombers explores why cultural, media and political reports from various geographies present different information about and portraits of the same women suicide bombers. The majority of Western media and sovereign states engaged in wars against groups deploying bombings tend to focus on women bombers' abnormal mental conditions; their physicality-for example, their painted fingernails or their beautiful eyes; their sexualities; and the various ways in which they have been victimized by their backward Third World cultures, especially by "Islam." In contrast, propaganda produced by rebel groups deploying women bombers, cultures supporting those campaigns, and governments of those nations at war with sovereign states and Western nations tend to project women bombers as mythical heroes, in ways that supersedes the martyrdom operations of male bombers.

Many of the books published on this phenomenon have revealed interesting ways to read women bombers' subjectivities, but do not explore the phenomenon of women bombers both inside and outside of their militant activities, or against the patriarchal, Orientalist, and Western feminist cultural and theoretical frameworks that label female bombers primarily as victims of backward cultures. In contrast, this book offers a corrective lens to the existing discourse, and encourages a more balanced evaluation of women bombers in contemporary conflict.

This book will be of interest to students of terrorism, gender studies and security studies in general.

Review

'This is an in-depth, original analysis of the phenomenon of women as terrorists. Rajan explores her subject in a truly interdisciplinary manner. She relies on the most recent sophisticated attempts to think about transnational feminism and feminist theory, but she also brilliantly brings to bear upon the subject a complex psychoanalytical framework which explores different stereotypes of women, such as victims, martyrs, and mother of the nation. This book will be an extremely important resource.' - Drucilla Cornell, Professor of Political Science, Women's Studies, and Comparative Literature at Rutgers University.

'A fascinating study that takes us across four continents, Women Suicide Bombers offers a refreshing perspective on disparate and controversial representations of women suicide bombers. It leads the reader through the labyrinth of the mass media, rebel communiqués and popular culture narratives and succeeds in reconstructing these women as active militants negotiating violence, instead of as pathological victims. A must read that makes in invaluable contribution to the literature on women in war, global terrorism, human rights and anti-colonial movements.'- Charlotte Bunch, Founding Director of the Center for Women’s Global Leadership and Distinguished Professor in Women’s and Gender Studies, Rutgers University

Your Life Isn't for You: A Selfish Person's Guide to Being Selfless, by Seth Adam Smith

Give Your Life to Live Your Life

In this book, Seth Adam Smith expands on the philosophy behind his extraordinarily popular blog post “Marriage Isn't for You”—which received over 30 million hits and has been translated into over twenty languages—and shares how living for others can enrich every aspect of your life, just as it has his. With a mix of humor, candor, and compassion, he reveals how, years before his marriage, his self-obsession led to a downward spiral of addiction and depression, culminating in a suicide attempt at the age of twenty. Reflecting on the love and support he experienced in the aftermath, as well as on the lessons he learned from a difficult missionary stint in Russia, his time as a youth leader in the Arizona desert, his marriage, and even a story his father read to him as a child, he shares his deep conviction that the only way you can find your life is to give it away to others. Your Life Isn't For You was recently named the Gold Medalist for Inspirational Memoir in the 2015 Living Now Book Awards!

Living you life for others
By Patricia Faulhaber
Smith begins this book by writing, “Your life isn’t for you. Really. It’s not. Your life isn’t for you and my life isn’t for me. The truth is that nature didn’t design us to find fulfillment in living for ourselves. We can achieve the fullest measure of life only by living it for others.”
That’s the opening paragraph. The author uses the rest of the short 82 pages to describe how he lived his life only for himself and finally found peace when he started living for others. Smith starts the first chapter by explaining how he was born with a “frighteningly large head.”
From there he starts to intertwine his story with a bedtime story his dad read to him and his sister called, “The Selfish Giant.” He uses parts of that story to illustrate his message throughout the book and his story.
Smith also writes openly and in detail about attempting to end his own life. His thoughts before the attempt and his thoughts afterward are very moving and telling.
The message of this book is important to all ages. Living for others makes one’s own life more meaningful. We all need and look for meaning in life. Smith puts it front and center in this book, living only for one’s self is not a good way to live.
what can happen in life and how good life can be if lived for others.
Each chapter begins with really great quotes. Plus, the way the author mixes the story of “The Selfish Giant” makes the message really stick. It’s a great book with a great message.

Poison Ivy: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries), by Cynthia Riggs

On her first day as adjunct professor at Ivy Green College, Victoria Trumbull recognizes the stench emanating from her classroom as more than just dead mice. Brownie, the groundskeeper's mangy mutt, soon discovers a second body hiding beneath a cluster of poison ivy.

The stakes have never been higher for Ivy Green, which is on the brink of losing already-lukewarm support from its accredited partner, Cape Cod University. Thackery Wilson, the founder of Ivy Green, worries that the bad publicity from the murders will obliterate the financial and academic support the tiny college and its dependent students desperately need. As the bodies continue to pile up, all tenure committee members, Victoria and Brownie find themselves hunting a serial killer and trying to save the college.

This charming 11th entry in Cynthia Rigg's Martha's Vineyard mystery series brings the island to life with a cast of eccentric characters led by a unique and endearing sleuth.

I Want To Be Victoria Trumbull
By Susan Santangelo
If I ever grow up, which is debatable, according to my family, I want to be Victoria Trumbull, the protagonist of Cynthia Riggs' fabulous Martha's Vineyard mystery series. Victoria is smart -- people smart. Ok, so she's 92 years old, backed into the Meals on Wheels truck (could happen to anyone -- don't ask me how I know this, please) and she can't drive any more. But so what? She's a published poet (like the author's mother),an honorary detective on the police force, and can figure out who's hiding what and why faster than people half her age. This is a great series, and Poison Ivy is the latest in a long line of hit mysteries. I loved the idea of being denied tenure playing such an important part in the book -- what a great motivation to bump off so many people. Poison Ivy is a real gem!

By Miss Ivonne
Victoria Trumbull, long celebrated as a poet, gets her chance to teach poetry at the fictional upstart institution, Ivy Green College. (In actuality, Martha's Vineyard boasts only one high school and no colleges.) Where the perennially 92-year-old Victoria goes, murder soon follows. Victoria discovers a corpse on her very first day of class. The body belongs to Dr. Harlan Bliss, a professor at Cape Cod University and a member of the Ivy Green College Oversight Committee, which oversees faculty appointments and the like at the 10-year-old college. Before September's through, authorities uncover nearly a dozen more -- much to the dismay of the priggish Ivy Green College President Thackery Wilson!

Poison Ivy Murder, available only in the Kindle format, is probably the weakest of the Victoria Trumbull novels by far. The corpses pile up in such rapid succession that the novel starts to become a parody of a cozy. The cardboard characters don't help, either. College President Thackery Wilson evinces so much pomposity, self-importance, and ineffectuality that the reader cannot fathom that this is the same Dr. Wilson that founded Ivy Green College in order to bring higher education to those working-class Islanders left behind on a 21st century Martha's Vineyard that's become the playground for politicians and Hollywood stars. Likewise, the irascible, unreliable caretaker Walter, the ruthless academic Roberta Chadwick; Phillip Bigelow, the blustery professor of military science; and the over-achieving, tattooed former teenage mother Jodi Paloni never rise above the level of stock characters from a third-rate novel, without a grain of nuance. The fairytale resolution depends on more deus ex machinas than a Euripides tragedy.

Sadly, coming off of two of her best novels, Touch-Me-Not: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries) and The Bee Balm Murders: A Martha's Vineyard Mystery (Martha's Vineyard Mysteries), Cynthia Riggs has produced a lackluster novel suitable only for the most rabidly dyed-in-the-wool Victoria Trumbull fans. Other readers can easily skip this one.

Too Big to Fail: The Inside Story of How Wall Street and Washington Fought to Save the Financial System--and Themselves, by Andrew Ross So

A brilliantly reported true-life thriller that goes behind the scenes of the financial crisis on Wall Street and in Washington.

In one of the most gripping financial narratives in decades, Andrew Ross Sorkin-a New York Times columnist and one of the country's most respected financial reporters-delivers the first definitive blow- by-blow account of the epochal economic crisis that brought the world to the brink. Through unprecedented access to the players involved, he re-creates all the drama and turmoil of these turbulent days, revealing never-before-disclosed details and recounting how, motivated as often by ego and greed as by fear and self-preservation, the most powerful men and women in finance and politics decided the fate of the world's economy.

About the Author
Andrew Ross Sorkin is the award-winning chief mergers and acquisitions reporter for The New York Times, a columnist, and assistant editor of business and finance news. He is also the editor and founder of DealBook, an online daily financial report. He has won a Gerald Loeb Award, the highest honor in business journalism, and a Society of American Business Editors and Writers Award. In 2007, the World Economic Forum named him a Young Global Leader.

From The Washington Post
From The Washington Post's Book World/washingtonpost.com At 6:30 a.m. on June 6, 1944, U.S. forces began their assault on Omaha Beach as part of the Normandy landings. Casualties among the first wave were horrendous as infantry struggled out of their landing crafts, known as Higgins boats, under intense fire. Incredible acts of individual heroism and great leadership on the spur of the moment eventually saved the day, but not before chaos and death swept the sand. Combat historian S.L.A Marshall described Omaha Beach as "an epic human tragedy which in the early hours bordered on total disaster." At 11 a.m. on Sept. 15, 2008, Lloyd Blankfein pulled up in front of a Manhattan office building to continue working on a way to save his firm, Goldman Sachs. "I don't think I can take another day of this," one of his employees remarked. Blankfein shot back, "You're getting out of a Mercedes to go to the New York Federal Reserve. You're not getting out of a Higgins boat on Omaha Beach." Blankfein was right: Being a Wall Street banker in 2008 was nothing like being a soldier during the Normandy invasion. The financial crisis may have been a once-in-a-lifetime struggle for a group of very well-paid banking executives, but the hardships they endured were long hours, uncomfortable phone calls, and mediocre takeout food. The only thing that JPMorgan Chase and Goldman Sachs had in common with the U.S. forces was that, ultimately, they won: The Wall Street executives kept their jobs, their bonuses and their pensions; they benefited from unprecedented rule changes and unlimited monetary and fiscal support; and their firms became even bigger and more dangerous to the economic health of society. Stephen Ambrose retold the human dimensions of World War II in convincing and excruciating detail. Andrew Ross Sorkin is the Stephen Ambrose for our financial crisis, with the blow-by-blow story of how rich bankers fought to save the Wall Street they knew and loved. The details in "Too Big To Fail" will turn your stomach. The arrogance, lack of self-awareness, and overweening pride are astonishing. Sorkin puts you there -- you see events unfold moment by moment, you hear the conversations, you can sense the hubris. The executives of our largest banks ran their firms into the ground, taking excessive risks that even now they fail to understand fully. But, as these individuals saw it, unless they personally were saved on incredibly generous terms, the world's economy would grind to a halt. This is as compelling as it is appalling. Jamie Dimon, the astute, well-connected and ultimately victorious head of JPMorgan Chase -- a character whose development is revealed meticulously in Duff McDonald's "Last Man Standing" -- told his shareholders' meeting earlier this year that 2008 was probably the company's "finest year ever." He was talking about what you and I call the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Sorkin in his general narrative and McDonald in his biography are sympathetic to their protagonists, but the portraits that emerge are not encouraging. Perhaps for this reason, both shy away somewhat from a key point: You can blame the bankers all you want, but it is the government's job to prevent the financial sector (and anyone else) from holding or exercising this kind of power over us. Where was the government? By 2008, our executive and legislative branches had long been deep in bipartisan slumber, allowing vulnerabilities to build up in the form of overspending, rising consumer debt levels and lax (or nonexistent) protection for consumers against outrageous practices by the financial sector. This bigger picture is missing from Sorkin's and McDonald's blow-by-blow accounts, but it is a recurrent theme in "Past Due," by journalist Peter S. Goodman. We can quibble about the relative importance of some details -- such as the role of China's high savings rate in lowering global interest rates and feeding the American credit boom -- in Goodman's highly informative account. But there is no question that politicians either believed that crazy "financial engineering" created a sound basis for sustainable growth or just loved what the financial system could do for them at election time. And, as Sorkin relates, it is hard to escape the conclusion that the rhetoric regarding our supposedly free markets without government intervention just masks the reality -- that there is a revolving door between Wall Street and Washington, and powerful people bend the rules to help each other out. In an illustration of Wall Street clubbiness, Sorkin documents a meeting in Moscow between Hank Paulson, secretary of the treasury (and former head of Goldman Sachs), and the board of Goldman Sachs. As the storm clouds gathered at the end of June 2008, Paulson spent an evening talking substance with the board -- while agreeing not to record this "social" meeting in his official calendar. We do not know the content of the conversation, but the appearance of this kind of exclusive interaction shows how little our top officials care about public perceptions of favoritism. In saner times, this would constitute a major scandal. At moments of deep crisis, understanding what influences policymakers and having access to them can help a firm survive on advantageous terms. Goldman Sachs was saved, in large part, by suddenly being allowed to become a bank holding company on Sept. 21, 2008. Our most senior government officials determined that the United States must allow Goldman to keep its risky portfolio of assets, while offering it essentially unfettered access to cheap credit from the Federal Reserve. In rescuing a crippled investment bank, the Treasury created the world's largest government-backed hedge fund. In the face of these developments, Andrew Haldane, head of financial stability at the Bank of England, has become blunt about the way our banking system interacts with (and rips off) taxpayers. In a recent paper that represents the straightest talk heard from the official sector in a long while, Haldane puts it this way: The government may say "never again" to bailouts, but when faced with the choice to either "rescue big banks or allow the world economy to collapse," it will reasonably choose the route of rescue. But, knowing this, the people running our biggest banks have an incentive to take more risk -- if things go well, bank executives get the upside, and if there's a problem, the taxpayer will pick up the check. If a financial sector boss wants greater assurance of a bailout, he or she should make bigger and potentially more dangerous bets -- so the government simply cannot afford to let that bank fail. This, Haldane argues, is our "doom loop" -- big banks know they can get away with the same behavior (and more) again, and we are doomed to repeat the same boom-bust-bailout cycle. A long time ago, President Andrew Jackson's private secretary, Nicholas Trist, described the Second Bank of the United States, the last financial institution to seriously challenge the power of the president, thus: "Independently of its misdeeds, the mere power, -- the bare existence of such a power -- is a thing irreconcilable with the nature and spirit of our institutions." Unless and until we break the political power of our largest banks, the middle class will be hammered down. Whose taxes do you think will be raised to reflect the costs of repeated financial shenanigans? The financial sector will become even richer and more powerful. If you didn't like where inequality in the United States was already heading, wait until you see the effects of this recession. The most significant result of the financial crisis is the emergence of six large banks that are undoubtedly too big to fail and therefore enjoy a strengthened government guarantee; Goldman, JPMorgan, Citigroup, Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Morgan Stanley are the beneficiaries of the doom loop. The most significant non-result is the fact that no comprehensive legislation has yet been passed to reform the financial sector. Without really serious reform, we have every reason to start counting down to the next financial crisis, and to the next fleet of Mercedes lining up before the New York Fed.

Sorkin channels the big boys
By Reader
The problem with this book is not just that the author makes virtually no effort to explain why the whole financial system would have collapsed in 2008 absent huge taxpayer bailouts, other than in a few sentences in an epilogue. The problem is that throughout the book he uncritically channels the explanations for the collapse provided by the titans of Wall Street. The CEOs blame the government, the profit-seeking hedge funds and the shorts, never themselves. They come up with ludicrous justifications for billions in salaries and bonuses that fund their lavish lifestyles. You can almost hear Sorkin's pain when he describes how much the net worth of the Lehman CEO, Dick Fuld, declined, and how he has to consider selling his wife's art collection. The fact that he had redeemed hundreds of millions worth of stock ($482 million according to Fortune magazine) as his company was disintegrating around him barely gets mentioned. The accounting tricks used to prop up these paragons both to take their toxic assets temporarily off the books and to underreport the real compensation to executives go unmentioned. After reading this you also wonder what it is that these people actually do to earn these billions. Sorkin uncritically says that this money is necessary to "retain the talent." But Bank of America decided to pay $38 billion for Merrill Lynch after doing due diligence for a total of two days. Was this actually a demonstration of "talent"? The only sense you get of these people is that they're all scrappy testosterone-filled climbers from disadvantaged backgrounds who still feel a deep need to prove themselves and who also want to belong to an all-male club. Government regulators also belong to the same club; any of these CEOs can get any government official they want on the phone within a few minutes. Virtually every quote from a CEO has the "f" word somewhere in it, and women are persona non grata except for wallflower wives, who are either crying at some decision by their husbands that turns out to be brilliant (p. 40, 171), or are waiting patiently at home to stroke their egos. The two women who have anything to do with this story, Erin Callan, the Lehman CFO, and Sheila Bair, the FDIC Chairwoman, are disparaged in the meanest possible terms. Callan was a "diversity hire" (p. 112) whom Sorkin further maligns by repeating unsubstantiated rumors that she slept her way to the top. (p. 120). She "knew precious little" about her subject matter and "had no background in accounting whatsoever." (p. 29). A tax lawyer, with no background in accounting? Sure. She's ridiculed for having a framed cover story from a Conde Nast magazine on her wall; so she's also vain. Bair is similarly ridiculed as a "showboat," a "grandstander," and, worst of all in this all-male club, "not a team player." Sorkin is a talented writer, but New York Times reporters should do better than serve as propaganda mouthpieces for the ruling class that has fooled so many of us and stolen so many of our resources.

Simply a chronology
By Gregory Forsthoefel
The book details the events, the people and the conversations that roiled the banks in 2008. The book does not really discuss why the events happened. If you're looking to understand why these banks fell, this is not the book to read.

The book is very readable and even at 539 pages, a person can finish it quickly. Another plus is that unlike most NY Times reporters, the author keeps most of his opinions out of the story until the last 2 pages.

His opinions are:

The government allowing Lehman to go into bankruptcy was the catalyst that caused the floodgates to open. This is probably why he spends a lot of the book developing the Lehman story.

He's ambivalent about whether the government players could have prevented the collapse of the banks or even if they did the right things when they did act. But he's quite clear that more banking regulation was needed then and is needed now.

One can disagree with his opinions, but he does well to leave most of them till the end of the book.

A few criticisms:

As mentioned, he does not discuss why exactly these events happened. In the epilogue, he briefly mentions 4 events that percolated over 10 years that conspired to cause the perfect storm in 2008. But he could have spent a chapter (prologue) describing these events and how they conspired to cause the problem. Apparently he's not a banker or an academic, so maybe he didn't feel qualified to do this.

Second criticism: In a few places prior to his epilogue, he lets us know his (negative) opinion of some players. It's obvious his disdain for Chris Cox and Sheila Bair. But he's particularly vitriolic towards the Wall Street Journal editorial page. I thought that as a chronicler, the author should have omitted his opinions of these people/institutions. Except for these incidents, he does largely keeps his opinions out of the manuscript until the last few pages.

Overall, a quick read that details the players and the chronology of events. If all you need is to understand the crisis, then this book should suffice.

A Real Page Turner
By Alan
This is an excellent book that reads like something that Dan Brown might have written. But its real. The part that amazed me was the level of detail Sorkin was able to get about behind the scenes conversations that took place. Stuff about how people such as Dick Fuld of Lehman reacted to the problems when it was becoming clear that the company was going down and he was in denial. How Paulson was reacting to things when there were no rules about what to do.

But probably the most interesting parts were how the different personalities were reacting while the ground was shifting under them. At the peak, many of the people involved were literally working 24 hours a day highlighted by a phone call made to Vikram Pandit, CEO of Citibank at 3 am telling how a deal he made at midnight for Wachovia had instead been trumped by another and that that deal had already been signed and blessed by the government. How major decisions were being made on the run and how solid institutions became institutions on the brink in a matter of hours.

The book also explains how companies like Barclays and China Investment Corporation were working behind the scenes as well how Paulson, Geithener and others in the government were scrambling to keep things from collapsing. There is a lot of Monday Morning Quarterbacking going on and some of the things these people did may not have been the best, but they pulled it off and we should all be grateful.

But there some bad guys, namely the short sellers and as usual some in congress. The book makes clear that out of control short selling added fuel to the flames that were occurring and that when we were facing this emergency some members of Congress were focused on their own butt instead of doing what was needed.

There is a huge cast in this book and its is sometimes hard to keep the people and their roles straight, but make the effort. You will be rewarded.

Depends on what you are looking for, and how you want to find it.
By sumacidal
Probably a great book for someone wanting to get into or expand their knowledge on professional guitar finishing. Covers every aspect of guitar finishing to some degree (some aspects way more than others). Is directed at people who want to replicate the old school finishes and be able to duplicate traditional guitar finishes, and have access to materials and tools that the people like myself doing a limited number of guitars are not going to be able to invest in. The format of the book is not to my taste as there are hardly any pictures showing anything, and it seems to jump around quite a bit, although this seems to fit in with the general theory of guitar finishing in that all that exists in certainty is bare wood and a finished product. After doing a lot of research (including reading this book cover to cover 5-7 times), it seems that for every individual there is a different sequence of doing things with different kinds of products with differing amounts, times, etc. The author doesn't wrap this up for you as he kind of glances and breezes through multiple ways of doing things, interspersing history and helpful tips/lessons throughout in a not-completely-logical order at times. There are a number of recipes but these are aimed at replicating traditional finishes, and there is little in the way of making someone who is inexperienced feel confident in trying to do something different. It gives good advice on the pros and cons of certain techniques or materials, but one is left wondering "so what do I want to use then????"lol. A final PITA (although it is not the book's fault), is that only specialty stores (limiting to mail-order/internet for many) stock anything that you need, from the recommended sandpapers to the various other materials, grain filler (nobody around here even knows what that is), etc. so you might as well make sure you have a stewmac or woodcraft acount before even getting started on any of this.

Best for: professional guitar finishers (including those still working their way there) that have professional spray equipment (or access), and some prior finishing experience who want to know everything they can about the history, materials, and applications of guitar finishing.

Good for: People wanting to get a professional quality traditional guitar finish that have access to and/or are willing to invest in a bunch of tools and supplies to do a great job, and/or guitar buffs who want to know all this stuff.

Not so good for: People without a lot of extra money who have no access to tools or materials, and who want to do a professional quality finish. Also may have little to no interest in the history of finishing....... or reading.

Worst for: Poor people with no access to tools or materials who want to do creative (as in weird creative), nontraditional, or "wrong" finishes, and could care less about how Fender or Gibson cover up perfectly beautiful wood with tone-sucking paint.

I hated every minute of it
By Amazon Customer
I had to use this book to teach my music appreciation class because it needed to be standardized across the sections, and I hated every minute of it. It's incredibly poorly organized, both in overall structure and within the chapters. It manages to be miraculously too specific and too vague about many of its topics, and it's not an accessible language.

My biggest problem with the book is that you can't teach from it. I'm a classical music guy, and teaching jazz and world music, I literally had to do outside research on every single topic. I would read the chapter and know nothing of any substance more about the music. On the bright side, I ended up learning a lot about these topics (from other sources) but it was incredibly frustrating.

Rented the book with 3 cd's from Apex_Media. It did indeed come with the cd's and the book was gently used. CD's in excellent condition. The book itself was a little hard to follow, but was required for my class and did it's job. Great rental company, standard book.
