These OpLog aspects include principles, imperatives and tenets, which are stated and analyzed. The second dimension relates to the scientific aspects of logistics. It is manifested by a formal network model that represents the structural and operational features of an OpLog system. Hence the book examines both artistic and scientific dimensions of military logistics and integrates the respective qualitative and quantitative aspects into a unified and definitive presentation of operational logistics.

Chapter 1 presents a general introduction to military logistics. Chapter 2 discusses the general structure and characteristics of logistics and describes its three levels - strategic, operational and tactical. Chapter 3 focuses on Operational Logistics (OpLog). Chapter 4 deals with the logistics planning process. Chapter 5 addresses the issue of logistics information. Chapter 6 deals with forecasting logistics demands. Chapter 7 introduces the first version of the logistics network model. Chapter 8 addresses an important property of an OpLog system - Flexibility. Chapter 9 discusses two major (and dual) issues in OpLog practice: force accumulation and medical treatment and evacuation. Chapter 10 presents an inter-temporal network optimization model that is designed to determine deployment and employment of the support chain in an OpLog system.

Dr. Kress is a Research Fellow at RAFAEL, heading the Logistics and Combat Modeling Branch of the Center for Military Analyses (CEMA), Haifa, Israel. He also teaches at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, Technion - Israel Institute of Technology. Dr. Kress has been leading major logistics research projects for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for over a decade.

Expensive book, but well worth in my case. I needed a framework and structure for armed conflict logistics, and this one had a great layout and explanation for the concepts and principles. This book is more academic, as opposed to detailing a process (e.g., step by step how-to) or a historical description (e.g., what happened).

While this is an interesting fruit, the book is very sketchy in its approach and presents nothing new that cannot already be found online through any search engine. In fact, you will find a LOT MORE if you just Google "sour sop" It has also had a title change since I first downloaded it. My version is called "A Cure for Cancer - Sour Sop."

There are no scientific references for verifying the "cancer cure" claim (which no one in the United States who sells it is allowed to publicly state). There is nothing that stands out in the nutrient list or the health benefits that point to any magical properties at all, like you might find in the in-depth works about how the amygdalin-to-cyanide transformation in apricot kernels functions in the body, for example, and why they work as a more well-known and easier attainable cancer cure. The lists are just the usual general vitamins, minerals and nutrients, and not even specifically named amino acids or other specific chemicals or compounds that it may contain that give it "cure" status.

There are no recipes or ways to use the fruit for the maximum "curative effect" and it reads like a quick article purchased off a popular micro job site for $5.

Maybe it is a cure, and maybe not. But the information in this book is less than convincing for me to waste time searching out this elusive fruit, than say, an orange, or apricot kernels, or baking soda.

George Klosko works in both normative political theory and the history of political thought. His books include Political Obligations (Oxford, 2005) the Second Edition of The Development of Plato's Political Theory (Oxford, 2006). The Oxford Handbook of the History of Political Philosophy (2011), which he edited. He is Henry L. and Grace Doherty Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia.

Excellent intro to political theory book

This volume covers ancient and medieval thinkers (from the Sophists to medieval Christian thinkers). Klosko's prose is very clear and he has a lot of skill in presenting the material in helpful ways. Each chapter also provides helpful lists for further reading. Klosko himself is a well-known and respected Plato scholar; consequently, his treatment of topics like the Socrates/Plato distinction the intellectual climate in Greece during the fourth and fifth centuries BCE is second to none. I only wish he'd included a chapter on Thucydides. Recommended reading for undergraduates to more advanced students hoping to get a clear overview of political theory in this period.

We really needed something like this.

I'm one of those embarrassingly huge fans of this show so it was kind of a given that I was going to love this book. But let me tell y'all why it's good and why it's important.

This is Ruby and Sapphire's story of love and freedom. I think we all know that a children's storybook that's about a "she" falling in love with a "she" is bound to get some raised eyebrows in a world that thinks relationships like theirs can never be innocent, but I would prefer not to focus on that much at all. I just want to say that it's so vital that children see these relationships in the same context that they see cross-sex relationships--and it's not JUST so kids who have same-sex crushes and attractions can see themselves and know they can get fairy tale endings too. It's also for the rest of you--and if those of you who aren't queer can imagine growing up with no books about people like you, you might start to get the idea.

But you might not be able to really understand, because you probably CAN'T imagine how devastating it is--when there don't seem to be nice words that describe you, or when futures for people like you don't seem to exist, or when you want to know where you are in the literature people get upset, or when people talk to you like it either doesn't matter that you're invisible or that you're disgusting for wanting that. We want to be in stories because stories are how humanity talks to itself. If we aren't in them, we also learn very young that we don't truly get to participate in human life.

So I want to say thank you to everyone who made it possible for something like this to exist. I'm so happy, but also relieved--and a little exasperated that something this sweet and pure took this long to get here because some people look at it and don't see it for what it it is.

So what is it?

Yes, this story features the beginning of the love between Ruby and Sapphire, though it still doesn't really delve into that. We see very little of their time together. We see them both being sort of in awe of each other--Ruby being amazed that Sapphire would want to be around someone like her when she's an aristocrat and has amazing powers to see beyond time, and Sapphire being amazed that Ruby's courage upended what she thought was inevitable--and we get a peek at the way they look at each other.

What we do see more of is their decision to become a Fusion together--the ability the Gem characters have to meld into each other and become another person who represents their relationship. (But also the new Gem will have her own thoughts and feelings, her own new appearance, and her own attitude built from what her component Gems inspire in each other.) In Sapphire and Ruby's story, I think the Fusion relationship is a unique one--not just because she was the first of her kind in her society, but because the relationship between Ruby and Sapphire is now forever changed by how they feel about becoming another entity together. They will eventually fully love each other, but that love will always be influenced by what they've experienced as a Fusion.

And everything about their relationship is about possibility, opportunity, novelty, freshness, and power. Rubies in Gem society are supposed to be simple soldiers who do what they're told and fight with their comrades. Sapphires in Gem society are supposed to be wise seers who don't let their emotions affect what happens next. When Ruby made a choice that Rubies aren't supposed to make, Sapphire helplessly watched a future develop that wasn't in the plan. And both of them found what they'd rather be instead. I really appreciate that there was such a strong "supposed to" that the characters challenged without quite meaning to, and that leaving what they were accustomed to did cause them some distress. They had to find something new to be now that Ruby couldn't do what Rubies do and Sapphire couldn't do what Sapphires do. They realized there are multiple "supposed to's" for Gems like them, and fusing together into someone who had no "supposed to's" (because she wasn't supposed to exist) must have made it so much more joyous to explore what lay ahead.

The art is pretty special--lots of unsettling images (though nothing too scary), lots of beautiful images, and a different style from the cartoon--it's simplified and stylized, but it still gets plenty of emotion onto those little faces. The backgrounds are lovely as they generally are in the show, and the characters commenting on the text in a meta fashion and talking to each other from little alcoves (Sapphire above, Ruby below) was really powerful. There's narration, but there's also Sapphire and Ruby saying how they felt about what was happening, and expressing opinions about each other's statements and caring about each other's distress. Eventually, they go into each other's chambers, comment on how they feel, and share their perspectives. It seems simple but it's quite a nuanced metaphor and I think a lot of children will understand it despite the complexity.

Speaking of complexity, there are some concepts here that I think render this book most appropriate for people who have context from watching the TV show. The fusion concept isn't presented all that accessibly to new fans, and if you haven't seen the show before you don't know that when Gems' physical form is destroyed, they reform later (if their Gem isn't smashed). You don't get introduced to Pearl even though she's there, and you have no context for the illustration of Blue Diamond (and her Pearl), and even though Garnet is mentioned in the online description of the book, she's not called by name in the story itself (just like in the episode). It's also a little unclear in the book (but not the cartoon) why the other Gems were furious at them for fusing, but I guess the story had to be kept simple. There's also some complex language in the book--vocabulary words children in the target group probably won't see in school for a few more years--but the presentation makes me think they will have context to pick it up. I remember doing that a lot as a kid with children's books that slipped in an advanced word here and there.

I was hoping for a couple things I didn't get, but I don't blame books for not fulfilling expectations they didn't promise to fulfill. I was really hoping to hear a little more about the moment of Sapphire and Ruby's first fusion, because in the show fusion is supposed to be about being on the same wavelength, and it seemed almost incongruous that they could have fused at that moment amidst all that confusion. If they did, they must have temporarily wanted the same thing. I know what Ruby wanted--to save Sapphire--but I would have loved to see a glimpse of Sapphire wanting to be saved rather than just being sort of blindsided by the rescue. I would have been really interested to see more of that moment of escape into their unheard-of spontaneous relationship--the action that changed who they were figuratively and literally (not to mention saving the planet).

The overall package is really precious and looks the way it should--like an age-appropriate, fairy-tale-esque storybook that doesn't have anything strange or inappropriate at all. I can't even imagine reading this to a child and having them stop me to ask "wait, ARE THEY TWO GIRLS??" because it's just so smooth and well told, and the characters' casually presented embraces and nonchalant closeness uses the same cues we'd expect to see on a Disney princess dancing with her prince. It's just Not. An. Issue. Not in the book. Outside of the book, I imagine it will be. I hope the hubbub it creates is primarily positive.

And now, of course, it's made even more clear in this book that Garnet doesn't ask questions in the show because Rose told her not to and she took it quite literally. (She seems to get around asking questions with tricky wording, though, like instead of "What did you see?" she'll say "Tell me what you saw.") If you already ARE the answer, what questions could you need to ask?

And I've got to say Rebecca Sugar dedicating the book to Ian Jones-Quartey is really sweet.

Gay kids books make me so very happy

OMG I pre-ordered this and me and my GAY WIFE just SQUEALED WITH JOY when it arrived! The book is so cute, at the top Sapphire has a box and Ruby has one at the bottom and they give little comments throughout the story from their own perspectives. I love it when everything changes and Sapphire can't see the future anymore! and I'm proud to have a book like this in my collection as a gay mom with a kid! I want him to see so much variety in love! Also the book is larger and thicker than the typical "little golden book" style.

This book is so beautiful, honestly

This book is so beautiful, honestly. My favorite part about the book is that Ruby and Sapphire show up on the top and bottom of every page and as the story progresses, both end up leaving their boxes and moving around and fusing, it's adorable! I thought this would be more of the size of the typical little golden books but it's bigger than I thought which is awesome. The art direction is incredible and new and refreshing (much like Ruby and Sapphire's fusion) and it's definitely a unique book in its own right. A must have for any fan.

While constructing the equations, the reader needs to visualize the positioning and orientation of field components in a three dimensional space. This is very difficult and usually requires extensive experience to be able to imagine the 3D space. Therefore, the book presents the construction of equations accompanied by a nice set of 3D illustrations. The figures greatly facilitate the understanding of the concepts.

While the concepts are being presented, it has been kept in mind that the outcome of the book will be a software package that will be sufficient to solve several types of basic electromagnetic problems. In each chapter the transformation of the concepts into programming is explained. Therefore the chapters are presented in such a way that, by adding/developing a new part of the code, chapter by chapter, at the end a well developed FDTD simulation package will be constructed.

Very useful book, but could be organized a bit better.

I hate to admit how often I use this book as a reference, rather than some of the more in-depth and technical tombs. It comes with a fully working MatLab simulation, but the organization of the software is a bit scattered. The presentation in the book is also a bit strange, jumping between explaining what is happening and large listings of MatLab code I had to piece routines from several chapters together to get a working version with the features I wanted. It covers all the topics you would need to get your own code going, or to understand the fundamentals of FDTD. If you are only a user of off the shelf FDTD, this book will still be very useful in introducing you to some of the limitations or quirks that you might run into, and giving you an in-depth understanding of what happens behind the scenes.

surprisingly effective example code listings

I'd just like to mention from personal experience that i was skeptical at first about whether or not i was wasting my time with this book. However it ended up becoming one of the most useful textbooks i've ever read, to the extent to which a textbook teaches the reader how to do something and how to understand something. from a pedagogical perspective I think this one is at the top of the heap.

this is an intro text to be sure. i would have paid an extra 20 bucks if there had been a section on dispersive media and/or Drude metals, but alas, the book does not go that far. no example codes on irregular grids either. but as an intro book this one goes from the basics of how fdtd works to detailing how to set up several typical EM problems, and even includes some of the more complicated topics such as CPML regions and nonlinear lumped element modeling.

from an academic perspective, yes, if you truly want to know every detail of FDTD go pick up the Taflove/Hagness book like anyone else would recommend you do. maybe it's just my particular learning style that the author used, but whatever it was, he hit the nail on the head. i went from knowing essentially nothing about FDTD to fine-tuning an impressive looking MATLAB simulation of a very cool nanophotonics experiment i ran with a pulsed terahertz source.

you can get a very impressive fdtd simulation running from these example codes. The only requirement is that, in my opinion, you MUST actually read the book. it is the only way you will be able to understand how the author wrote the subroutines, and what is necessary and what is not for your particular application. You may have to (as I did) write one or two small .m files of your own if you have unique geometries in your simulation or require additional modifications, but the code is written so well, integration of your own code with the author's is relatively seamless.

the bad news there will be no other help for you from anywhere except book if you can't immediately figure out how to get the example code running. the good news is that this is a very quick read, and the book is very clearly-laid out. if you invest a little time in it you will learn A LOT. i read the book cover to cover in my spare time over the course of about two weeks, and that was all the preparation i needed to figure out how to piece together the sample codes from the CD ROM. it can be done, and the code does work. good luck! :)

one of the better FDTD books

Very good practical introduction to the FDTD method.

and even though you couldn't solve a real problem with matlab code, the matlab code does exactly what it should, shows you something that works and allows you to see how it does work.

the book is well organized and clearly written.

While Taflove's book is better for shear volume of information, it would be much harder to develop working simulations using it.

A good primer for the newly graduated Engineer or individuals just trying to increase their knowledge. Easy to read and current. The sections on Multi-layer leaves many unanswered questions which leaves one wanting more information than is provided.

Needs a good editor...

This book needs a whole lot of serious editing. I was a trifle miffed by the poor grammer throughout the book, poor spelling, typographic errors in places and generally poor presentation.
The book also has sections which seem totally out of place. There is a chapter on electronic components which seems to be totally random. Maybe the author had a spare book chapter lying around on his desk and decided to put it in, maybe he got his filing mixed up and accidentally sent another book's chapter to the publisher...
Overall I'm not impressed.
