I'm inspired to create!

I have to admit it, I adore brunch. It's my favorite meal. It is wonderful to come across a beautiful new cookbook that not only provides lots of inspiration and more than a few totally new ideas for putting together a stunning breakfast or brunch, but is also a worthy addition to my cookbook collection. I'm impressed with this one, and can't wait to try out some of the recipes. I like the way the book is organized, it handily gives measurements for both US and metric cooks, and perhaps best of all, this cookbook is chock-a-block full of glorious color photos of each dish, which happens to be one of my cardinal rules for evaluating new cookbooks. If there are no color photos to give me the idea of what the finished dish should look like (this is a case where one picture is really worth a thousand... well, you know...), then I generally take a pass, no matter how clever the recipes appear to be. This cookbook meets that qualification with flying... colors!

Fantastic Recipes

This is an example of a hidden gem - no celebrity author, no glossy photos or massive size - but it is a very thoroughly tested and well written book of recipes. I'm a chef working on new recipes for a bed & breakfast and every single one in this book that I've tested came out perfectly the first time and got rave reviews from our tasters! Even more surprising is that it was published in London and includes instructions for both European and US cooks. VERY well done - can't recommend it highly enough.

Wonderfully Delicious

I enjoy making breakfast for family and friends on the weekend. I have a handful of breakfast and brunch cookbooks. This is one of my favorites. I constantly get positive reviews when I use recipes from this little gem. Last weekend I made the Lemon Ricotta Pancakes and the Lemon and Sage Tisane. My guests and I were in total heaven. My partner can't get enough of the Chocolate Chip Banana Bread. Most of the recipes are very easy with BIG, flavorful results. The only recipe I had a hard time with is the Marmalade and Almond Bread, but I probably wasn't paying close enough attention to the recipe. My plan is to cook my way through the entire book. There's enough variety to make this an exciting goal. The recipes range from simple egg and waffle dishes to hearty sandwiches. If you love cooking breakfast, don't pass on this book. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed.

About the Author

GEORGE G. KARADY received his doctorate in electrical engineering from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 1960. He also received an honorary doctorate from the Budapest University of Technology and Economics in 1996. He is currently the Chair Professor for the Salt River Project at Arizona State University.

KEITH E. HOLBERT earned his PhD in nuclear engineering at the University of Tennessee. He is presently the Director of the Nuclear Power Generation program in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. He is a registered professional engineer and a senior member of the IEEE.

Text Questions need revision

Answers on the back are incorrect, and chapter does not prepare student for the nature of questions asked by the text. Additionally, parameters are not clearly described. Good pictures and great explanations though!

Giving it only 3 stars because this book does not provide step-by-step instructions on energy conversions. To be clear this book is great if you want to do computer-based energy conversions using mathcad or matlab. It says so in the back of book. I just wish that my teacher had read that before choosing this book for this course since we are not using either of the mentioned software to do the energy conversions.

In short, get this book if you want to learn how to do computer-based energy conversions and avoid getting this book if you want to learn how to do it by hand. That is unless you are forced to buy it for a class.

Since the publication of "Spectral Methods in Fluid Dynamics", spectral methods, particularly in their multidomain version, have become firmly established as a mainstream tool for scientific and engineering computation. While retaining the tight integration between the theoretical and practical aspects of spectral methods that was the hallmark of the earlier book, Canuto et al. now incorporate the many improvements in the algorithms and the theory of spectral methods that have been made since 1988. The initial treatment Fundamentals in Single Domains discusses the fundamentals of the approximation of solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations on single domains by expansions in smooth, global basis functions. The first half of the book provides the algorithmic details of orthogonal expansions, transform methods, spectral discretization of differential equations plus their boundary conditions, and solution of the discretized equations by direct and iterative methods. The second half furnishes a comprehensive discussion of the mathematical theory of spectral methods on single domains, including approximation theory, stability and convergence, and illustrative applications of the theory to model boundary-value problems. Both the algorithmic and theoretical discussions cover spectral methods on tensor-product domains, triangles and tetrahedra. All chapters are enhanced with material on the Galerkin with numerical integration version of spectral methods. The discussion of direct and iterative solution methods is greatly expanded as are the set of numerical examples that illustrate the key properties of the various types of spectral approximations and the solution algorithms.

A companion book "Evolution to Complex Geometries and Applications to Fluid Dynamics" contains an extensive survey of the essential algorithmic and theoretical aspects of spectral methods for complex geometries and provides detailed discussions of spectral algorithms for fluid dynamics in simple and complex geometries.

Dense but valuable

A dense text on spectral methods, but very valuable to have available on my shelf. Not where I would necessarily point a student towards first (Boyd likely wins that prize) but a comprehensive overview of different spectral techniques. Volumes 1 and 2 really should be purchased together, and I feel that the content breakdown between the two is a bit oddly organized.

An excellent book!

I randomly came across this book in the library while looking up something else. I thumbed through it a bit and then ended up checking it out and taking it home, where I have proceeded to read it almost constantly over the last couple of days (with occasional breaks for comparatively less compelling things like eating, sleep, class, and hanging out with friends). I'm always a bookworm and am used to becoming absorbed in what I read. However, this is the first time in quite awhile that I've been so caught up in a book, particularly a non-fiction book.
I like this book so much because the authors worked hard at giving a thorough and unbiased look at the juvenile justice system and the kids stuck in that system. Of course, remaining completely unbiased is impossible; however, they tried to give a variety of points of view. They also tried to keep from vilifying any one group (parents, children, social workers, judges, police, the community, and so on), while still indicating the complexity of the problem. Case-studies were carefully chosen not to be sensational, but rather to exemplify the typical issues dealt with by kids in the justice system. Finally, they interspersed the information from the case studies with general information about the law, the way such cases are usually handled, and so on, then applied this new information that they had given back to the case study. This made it possible to learn a great deal about the system in general, while keeping it interesting because you could see the immediate application to one particular kid that you had learned about. This added to the book's general readability. All in all, this book is an excellent, well-written book that has the possibility of moving us a long way towards an understanding of these complex issues.

A real-life look at the kids in the "system"

Hubner and Wolfson do an excellent job of presenting the reader with the children's point of view of the juvenile court system. Children who are removed from their homes because of an abusive environment are often subjected to even worse treatment by the state-run system into which they are placed. Some of the problems that are brought to the reader's attention include: 1) Children are removed from the home based on hearsay evidence, 2) Parents must sometimes admit guilt (even if innocent) or they are accused of being in denial - this Catch-22 situation can be used to keep children separated from their parents regardless of the "facts", 3) Foster parents don't always receive adequate training, and are sometimes perpetrators of abuse. Some foster parents are only in it for the money. Yes, the system does benefit many children. But there is also a large number of children for whom the system is more abusive than the environment from which they were removed. Judge Edwards deserves a lot of credit, because he understands these issues and because he cares about the kids. Read this book at least twice.

Compulsively Readable

This is a textbook of the juvenile dependency system that reads like a page-turner novel. I was unable to put it down for 2 days. The authors' treatment of their material is even-handed and true-to-life. I have worked for the past 4 years as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate and Guardian Ad Litem for these children in my local juvenile court and the cases featured in the book closely mirror the actual cases I've seen over and over again in the courts. The book raises problems in the system to which there are no easy answers, and the authors don't attempt to offer any simplistic solutions: What does the system do with severely emotionally disturbed kids who blow through one placement after another? How do you know when to give up on parents and terminate parental rights? Do you wait until the child's crucial childhood years are mostly over, waiting for the parents to get their act together? How do we place children in good homes when there is such a shortage of foster and adoptive families? I urge anyone interested to get involved with the system as a volunteer. There are over 700 advocate programs around the country and the minimum time commitment is only 12 hours a month.
