According to Penley, who self-published The M.O.M.S. Handbook, the key to making mothering easy and enjoyable is to become aware of ways of interacting in the world (e.g., being extroverted or introverted, sensing things based on facts or feeling them intuitively) and balance personal needs with external demands. Penley developed her "Mothers of Many Styles" (M.O.M.S.) program to free women of the image of the "perfect" mother and help them identify their strengths and weaknesses first as mothers, and then in all relationships. Based on the Myers-Briggs personality inventory, Penley's questionnaires and evaluations may aid some readers, but others may find the system—it involves 16 personality types and 16 corresponding mothering styles—complicated and time-consuming. Perhaps the most valuable aspect of Penley's program is her focus on self-care and her recognition of the unique gifts that each woman has to offer her children. However, trying to work with Penley's system on a daily basis could, ironically, add more stress and yet another layer to the image of perfection: the thoroughly self-aware mother who can respond appropriately to her child in all situations. Motherstyles really helps mothers understand themselves, their own mothers, their friends, their husbands, even their kids. It helps mothers appreciate who they are as individuals, and who those around them are as individuals. It helps mothers to appreciate everyones differences. Every mother should read this book!!

I have learned so much about myself as a mother after reading this book! I highly recommend it especially for women like me who feel like they have never fit the mothering mold. It has been enlightening to discover how my personality type influences my mothering style.

Great book for Moms who "don't fit" the mold

If you are the mom who always has kleenex, a snack and a spare to share, fresh water bottles, a first aid kit, combs and hair accessories in your purse and glove box, if you bathe your children from 8 to 8:15 every night and you live by your calendar (which you never lose), you can still benefit from this book, which will help you understand your child who regularly forgets her coat at school and likes her room messy.

If you are the mom who looks at the clock at 6pm and says,"Oh crap, what am I going to make for dinner!", whose dining room table is too full of fun projects to actually allow you to serve dinner there, and whose kid gets a bath when they start to smell funny, this book is for you!

If you have tons of friends and your kid has few, or you like quiet time and your child needs to constantly be on the go, if you need lots of hugs but your child isn't interested, if your child color codes her sock drawer and you can't _find_ your sock drawer....this book is so for you.

You might not BE like most other moms, and you might still be doing a fantastic job as a mom! This book tells you how to leverage the strengths inherent in your mothering style...and there are strengths in _all_ of the styles, even the rare types.

Or your kids might not BE like other kids....here's some great insight into their styles and how to work with them...not change them.

The book has lots of practical ideas to bring harmony and joy to the family, but even if it didn't, it would be interesting all on its own.

Do not buy for Kindle

This book is impossible to read on a Kindle. Its a picture book in comic book format so the text is too small to read, Adjusting the font size has no effect on the pictures.

Thank goodness I tried the lending library first so its no loss to me.

I then had the sample sent to my Asus tablet with a 10" screen, the text is still too small to read.

Totally worthless as an eBook.

F1, past present and future

Adam Parr was the CEO of the historic Williams F1 team for 5 years. He tried to change the future of the sport for good and spoke out against Formula 1's Mr. Big's outdated ideas.

Less than 9 months later, Adam held in high regard by many of his peers mysteriously and swiftly resigned from his role and left the sport completely.

A week or so later the Williams F1 team subsequently received a multi-million dollar payment for re-signing up with Mr. Big and his plan - and until now, nothing has been seen or heard from F1's young pretender.

This is a sanguine but in incisive insight into the murky world of F1 and its power struggles. The players are described in vivid colour and the ending hints at an apocalyptic future that yet may lie ahead.

The comic book style illustrations are dark and add to the sense we are entering a gothamesque world that is much in need of a heroic saviour.

From the off, the Forward sets the scene. It is written by former head of the FIA, Max Mosely who notes F1 is "a strange culture indeed, in which people take legal action to avoid saving $10m a year".

Yet this is a book that is overwhelmingly positive, it does not feel as thought the author has an axe to grind or feels he needs to set the record straight. In fact with the legal problems of Mr. Big growing by the week, there are enough hidden threads that could be woven - with a little imagination - into a prospectus that could be the road map to launch F1 toward reclaiming its birthright.

I rarely spend £25 on a book - this was worth every penny - and I eagerly await part II.

About the Author

Russell currently lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, with her dogs, Minnie and Coco.

Great Mystery in New Mexico

I was delighted to read this fun book. Like all masterful mysteries, I never saw the end coming. It kept me awake trying to guess "who done it." I hope the writer continues to write about these characters. She has a real talent for the unexpected.

no one has put it ALL together like brian tracy has in this collection of works.A lot of readers
will never grasp the the magnatitude and depth

Nice Addition For Your Library

Brian gives a nicely organized presentation of his secrets to success. His presentation is a little different from some other self-help gurus. He tends to stick mostly to the facts and gives a lot of direct advice -- without resorting to fancy stories (I always wonder how many of those stories you hear are true - and why so many in the self-help group tend to repeat almost the same ones verbatim).
I find myself listening to these tapes about once per week. They are a nice reminder of the essential secrets of success.

Completely meets my expectations. I like that it's organized like a dictionary. I bought another good book on particles that requires looking at the table of contents to locate the page on which the particle is explained. This dictionary is superior.

excellent book but defective product

For the purpose, this book is just awesome much better than the Digman and Dowry. Easy to understand and conceptualise. However I got a defective product from Amazon. the book appeared to have been wet, there was mould on the sides and the pages were wrinkled. Two days after using the book, pages are coming out. Poor packaging by amazon and this book was just in a very awful condition. Shame on amazon. I'm in the caribbean and it's going to cost me as much or more than the book to send it back so i guess that's why Amazon sent me this crap.

About the Author
After receiving her MA in Music History and Literature at Arizona State University, Jean Ferris taught Music History and Appreciation at ASU. In addition to her work at the University, she has been involved with the music community by serving as a church choir director, singing with the Phoenix Symphony Chorale, playing the organ, and touring to Japan with her high school handbell choir--apparently the first handbell choir to perform in that country.

Ferris is the author of two books: Music: The Art of Listening and America's Musical Landscape.

Worth reading and I like it, but...

I admire the work that Kouzes and Posner have put into their five practices model and if someone asked me which books on leadership they should read, I would include "The Leadership Challenge". Nonetheless, it has some weaknesses in my view.

First, I feel it focuses so much on the inspirational side of leadership that it underplays the "sleeves-rolled-up" (getting the task done) reality of leadership in smaller firms. This feels like a big-company orientated book.

Second, it doesn't say much about how to develop leadership presence, even though the best leaders seem to have it. To me, great leadership is not just a matter of the right behaviours (which is what this book focuses on), it also depends on your presence. This, I feel, is a gap in the book.

Third, it might give some readers the impression that leaders must always be visionaries. It misses the point that a vision isn't always necessary, but a group purpose is. The purpose may be expressed as a vision, but then again it might not. It might instead be more pragmatic and short-term, especially if it's leadership of a rescue team we're talking about, not an international company.

Fourth, it says what you have to do (the five practices) to lead, but knowing what to do won't always enable someone to do it - especially if the behaviours aren't natural to them. Many leaders are stuck in old habits because of their psychology, but The Leadership Challenge doesn't address this.

Fifth, The Leadership Challenge, I feel, gives the impression that successful leaders have to be inspiring and lead from the front. But surely it is possible to put forth an inspiring idea without always being personally inspiring? Sure, it's helpful to be inspiring and a cheerleader kind of leader, but not everyone is like this. Think of Jim Collins book, "Good to Great," and the level 5 leaders he wrote about. They exuded humility and will, but were often rather low-profile. My point is that there are other ways of leading, but this book could give some people the idea that there's only one way of being a leader.

If you want a companion read that addresses these five points, the best I know of at this point is James Scouller's "The Three Levels of Leadership". This too provides a comprehensive, easily understood model of leadership, but it also gets into the leader's psychology and leadership presence, while staying practical and applicable to both large and small firms.

A book for everyday leaders

A great strength of this book is that it makes it very clear that it is designed for all people in leadership positions. The book came out of a research project, and the way the authors about it reveals a lot about its intent. Instead of interviewing top leaders in the business world, the authors interviewed ordinary leaders, but asked them about their peak leadership experiences. When were they at their best? The authors came up with these 5 cardinal rules of leadership:

1. Model the Way. Know your values, but also affirm the shared values of the group. Set the example by aligning actions with shared values.

2. Inspire a Shared Vision. Envision the future by imagining exciting and ennobling possibilities. Enlist others in a common vision by appealing to shared aspirations.

3. Challenge the Process. Search for opportunities by seizing the initiative and by looking outward for innovative ways to improve. Constantly generate small wins and learn from experience.

4. Enable Others to Act. Foster collaboration. Strengthen others by increasing self-determination and developing competence.

5. Encourage the Heart. Recognize contributions by showing appreciation for individual excellence. Celebrate the values and victories by creating a spirit of community.

This is a book for the ordinary leader, who dreams of extraordinary things. The idea that comes through all the way is that leadership is not just about your position or your company's status. Being a leader is about "relationships, credibility, and what you do." Highly recommended for anyone in leadership positions -- maybe even especially those NOT at the top of the totem pole.

Callenge Yourself

This is a very in-depth book that challenges leaders to mobilize their people to get extraordinary things done in their organizations. The content is very digestible, intuitive, and compelling. It is called "The Leadership Challenge" for a reason: the chapters offer anecdotes and activities that challenge you to become the best leader you can be. They are quite good. Something as simple as, "Write Your Credo"--where it challenges you to write your own guiding principles as a leader--proved to be a valuable exercise for me.

I like leadership books that offer intuitive content and at the same time teach me to apply what I'm reading. Another book I recommend that does this incredibly well is Leadership 2.0

But I digress, here's a summary of what's in "The Leadership Challenge":

PART I. WHAT LEADERS DO AND WHAT CONSTITUENTS EXPECT

1. The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership:
1) Model the way
2) Inspire a shared vision
3) Challenge the process
4) Enable others to act
5) Encourage the heart

2. Credibility Is The Foundation of Leadership: For people to follow someone willingly, the majority of constituents believe the leader must be honest, forward-looking, inspiring, and competent.

PART II. MODEL THE WAY

3. Clarify Values: Find your voice and affirm shared values.

4. Set the Example: Personify the shared values and teach others to model these values.

PART III. INSPIRE A SHARED VISION

5. Envision the Future: Imagine the possibilities and find a common purpose.

6. Enlist Others: Appeal to common ideals and animate the vision.

Part IV. CHALLENGE THE PROCESS

7. Search For Opportunities: Seize the initiative and exercise outsight.
